When Caroline Morris joins her sisters, Gracie Gold and Sam Carter for a Nantucket Island getaway, she has no idea how it will change her life.

The sisters stumble upon Misty Harbor Inn, the place their late mother loved so much, and Caroline talks her sisters into buying the beautiful but dilapidated inn. But can free-spirited Caroline stay focused enough to make opening the inn a reality? Hand drawn old postcards draw the sisters into the mystery of Hannah Montague, the young widow of the original owner.

Can the sisters discover the fate of this woman who disappeared in 1880?

Brief physical description

Caroline Marris is a young 61, with short blonde hair. Average height and average weight, she has a penchant for dressing in a casual style, usually wearing items of apparel that she’s collected in her travels, such as peasant blouses and skirts or khaki shorts, plus chunky jewelry as well as a gold Celtic cross pendant that she bought in Ireland. She has four left feet and is a lousy dancer!

Resembles…

This is a tough one. I don’t usually think of famous people when I’m creating a character, but if I had to pick one person, Caroline would probably resemble helen-mirren-400Helen Mirren. She’s such a fabulous actress. If she were just a few years younger, she could definitely play Caroline in a TV or movie production of Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn.

Strengths and weaknesses

Caroline is free-spirited and fun-loving. She’s not only a lousy dancer, but she’s not much of a cook or gardener, either. Her health problems have led her to embracing life. She does things on a whim. Except for her travel writing, she usually starts a new project before the last one is half finished. Still, she’s always smiling and his terrific at rallying people to a cause. She’s brave, courageous, and too often foolhardy.

Your inspiration for the character

Except for travelling the world over, Caroline and I share a lot of common characteristics. I’m terribly impulsive, I do have a lot of half-finished projects, but I always smile and I’m a terrific organizer of people. I’m not a party person, but I’m always cheering people on, making them feel at home or a part of whatever is going on.

Sunflower SummerSunflower Summer

Misty Harbor Inn officially opens, and Gracie Gold, the middle Marris sister, wrestles with an over-whelming decision. As the sisters learn the day-to-day workings of running than inn, Gracie counsels its first guests, newlyweds whose honeymoon seems to be ending before it begins.

Meanwhile Sam’s discovery of a clue in a secret room sheds unflattering light on Hannah Montague, who vanished from the house more than a hundred years ago. And as Gracie and Caroline welcome guests to the inn, they are delighted to see how God uses it–and then–to deepen relationships and transform lives.

Brief Physical description

58 years old, middle Marris sister, often wears colorful Capris and T-shirts, shoulder-length understated stled light hair.

Resembles…

Younger no-nonesense Doris Day

Strengths and weaknessesThe 46th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Has to be organized to survive, mostly a strength but occasionally a weakness…can’t go with the flow.

Inspiration

Both writing partner/mom Barbara Andrews and I are organized so we empathize with Gracie. Pam’s late dad’s Aunt Carrie is like Gracie in her tendency to want to help people like young bride in our book.

Whispers on the DockWhispers on the Dock

Sam Carter, the youngest Marris sister, decides to enter her mother’s blackberry cobbler recipe in the Summerfest baking contest. But she has a formidable opponent, a past winner who is not above engaging in dirty tactics to keep her title. Can Sam rise above the fray to reach out to this lonely woman?

Sam and her sisters, Caroline Marris and Gracie Gold, welcome a new guest to Misty Harbor Inn, an elderly woman who knows a great deal of their new home’s history. When she shares her photo album, they are stunned to learn that their mother lived there as a child, even though she told them that she’d never been to Nantucket except on her honeymoon! Why would she lie? What was she hiding?

The sisters make an intriguing discovery, not only about Hanna Montague, the young woman who vanished from the house more than a hundred years ago, but about their own family history.

Enjoy meeting Sam

Brief physical description

Samantha (Sam) Carter is a 52 years old retired elementary schoolteacher. Her blonde hair is cut in a sensible bobbed hairstyle that matches her personality. She enjoys cooking, and she’ll often watch cooking shows while she cross-stitches.  During the summer, her sisters often find her on the back porch in her jeans or denim Capris, sipping a cup of tea as she watches the sun set over Nantucket Sound.

Resembles…

I always pictured Sam looking a bit like Olivia Newton-John when she was in her fifties.Olivia NJ

Strengths and weaknesses

Sam is very sensible and grounded. She’s a good contrast to her sisters because she thinks things through more, although it takes her longer to come to a decision. She’s more introverted than her sisters and has a harder time making friends, but she learns to trust in God and the people He brings to her, and to take a little risk in order to make new friends.

Quirk (if any)

She can somehow cross-stitch and watch a cooking show at the same time and not miss a thing.

Your inspiration for the character

Maybe because I styled Sam to look like Olivia Newton-John, but I based Sam’s character a bit like the character Sandra Dee in the movie Grease. Sam is a little insecure, but her sisters encourage her to come out of her shell and be a stronger person.

Background to the story

My book is the third in the Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn series. Here’s a little blurb about the series:

The Postcards from Misty Harbor Inn series introduces readers to Caroline, Gracie and Sam as they gather for a vacation where they spent the summers as children, and follows their adventures as they fulfil their mother’s dream of opening a bed and breakfast. As the sisters heal from their mother’s passing, they bond in ways they never imagined and discover evidence of God’s hand in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

Here’s the back cover blurb for Whispers on the Dock, book 3 in the series:

The blooms in the Misty Harbor Gardens reach the pinnacle of their summer glory, and Sam Carter, the youngest Marris sister, decides to enter her mother’s blackberry cobbler recipe in the Summerfest baking contest. Bus Sam is competing against a formidable opponent, a past winner who is not above engaging in dirty tactics to keep her title. Can Sam’s newfound faith help her rise above the fray to reach out to this lonely woman?

The sisters also welcome a new guest, an elderly woman who knows a great deal about the inn’s history. When she share her photo album, they are stunned to find that their mother lived there for a short time as a child. But their mother never mentioned that. In fact, she told them she’d never been to Nantucket until her honeymoon! Why would she lie? What was she hiding?

Through clues in the woman’s reminiscences and photos, the sisters make an intriguing discovery – not only about the mysterious Hannah Montague, but also about their own family history.

As the warmth of summer turns to autumn, Sam and her sisters are amazed at the ways God has blessed them in their new Nantucket home.

Thanks Evangeline (aka Patti, Pam, Barbara, & Camy)!
