Or perhaps better would be, “Never let the truth get in the way of a ripping yarn”? since “good” suggests that if you’re going to imply that it’s based on facts then it actually is based on facts.

Just a ‘minor’ detail being that the said snake no longer exists – it was destroyed by Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:4):

“He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.[a])”
