Seriously, friends, if you haven’t got your hands or pre-ordered these stories you need to! I’ve paid close attention to independently released books over the past 10 years – they are books published directly by the author, without a traditional publisher – and the quality is amazing! The author is invested in every element of the publishing process from cover design to editing to marketing to sales. It’s a significant workload and expense, so I love being able to support indie authors and share their stories with you.
There are some terrific covers and brilliant storytelling amongst this batch of books, some I’ve already read and others I can’t wait to read. Firstly, let me draw your attention to two books in particular – Jennifer Rodewald’s It Will Be Forever and debut novelist, Jessica Kate’s The Kiss Dare. Both these books are FREE to newsletter subscribers. Jennifer’s is a full length novel, and boy, can she write!! Jessica’s short story gives you a taste of what’s to come with her debut full length novel, Love and Other Mistakes, releasing in July from Thomas Nelson. Sign up immediately and get these stories on your devices – trust me 🙂
And here’s something else that has never happened before – each of these covers appeals to me. Yep, every one. I wonder if that has something to do with the fact that the author has complete control over their designs and are willing to try something a little out of the ordinary. Jenny B. Jones’ deserves special mention – I think it is amazing – and the stunning fresh looks of Melissa Tagg’s and Catherine West’s are beautiful. Sibella’s is fabulous and then there’s Knox 😉
I’m super excited to read every one of these stories!
Giveaway!
For something fun, I’m going to give away a Kindle copy of one of these books (not The Kiss Dare or It Will Be Forever as you can get them free already!) to one person who comments on this post – winner’s choice! To enter, simply share with me which ones of these books would you love to read!
It’ll Be Forever by Jennifer Rodewald
A Rock Creek Romance
She’d left on purpose. Thought she’d stay gone…
Big-hearted Dre Rustin fled her small Nebraska hometown to distance herself from her brother’s troubled past. Texas seemed like a good place to start a new life. Now she’s looking forward to graduating from college, but first she’s got to handle Thanksgiving break. She’ll head home for the first time in years. No way is she going to get sucked back into the drama and charm—namely her brother’s best friend Tommy Kent—of Rock Creek. For moral support, she convinces her best friend to travel with her. Little good that does her.
Tom Kent might not have been the rebel Paul Rustin had been, but he’d earned a less-than-honorable reputation with the girls, which ruined the fragile hope he’d had for romance with Dre before she left for college. In the four years since Dre had shut Tom out, he hasn’t been able to let her go. Now she’s coming home, and he’s got this one last chance.
What if she could forgive him? What if they could recapture the tender feelings they’d shared years ago? What if they could build new dreams together?
It could be good. Really good. Maybe, just maybe, it could be forever.

Fearless: A Medieval Romance by Tamara Leigh
Age of Conquest #2
THE WULFRITHS. IT ALL BEGAN WITH A WOMAN.
A battle. A crown. The conqueror. The conquered. Medieval England—forever changed by the Battle of Hastings. And the rise of the formidable Wulfriths.
A CAPTIVE NORMAN
Sir Guarin D’Argent knew the danger of allowing a woman to turn him from his purpose, and yet he answered her cry across a bloody battlefield. Now he finds himself the lady’s captive among vengeful Saxons, weeks becoming months while his liege, Duke William of Normandy, subdues his new English subjects. Biding his time, Guarin plots an escape dependent on captivating his captor, a formidable quest with one more a warrior than a lady. But when his compassion is roused by the suffering of her people under Norman rule, the question of escape is jeopardized by the answer to who, exactly, is captivated—and in a conquered country, what hope there is for enemies beyond a kiss.
A DEFIANT SAXON
Her husband and young son slain by invaders, Lady Hawisa lives only for protecting her people. And revenge. While outwardly bending the knee to the usurper, she amasses rebels to send the conquerors back across the sea, along with the silver-haired warrior she never intended to take captive. Now that Guarin D’Argent has cause to wreak vengeance of his own and knows his captor is a Wulfrith, she dare not release him—just as she dare not succumb to his efforts to turn her from her purpose. But all changes when she is betrayed by one of her own. Will the struggle between the English resistance and the Normans find the two on opposite sides of the battlefield? Or might the Lord have other plans for them?
From a fateful encounter on the battlefield of Hastings, to a rebel camp deep in the wood, to the threshold of the Harrying of the North, Sir Guarin and Lady Hawisa’s tale unfolds in the second book in the AGE OF CONQUEST series that reveals the origins of the Wulfriths of the bestselling AGE OF FAITH series. Love in Chaos #1
Dillon Hayes is twenty-eight and single, an unfortunate status her overbearing family is determined to fix. So when she’s stuck on a cruise ship for a seven-day reunion with the lot of them, she’s desperate for any escape she can find, even if it means partnering with a sketchy stranger for an off-the-beaten-path snorkeling excursion. After her mother’s last matchmaking attempt, Dillon is more than willing to trade all her good sense for a few hours of solace.
Liam Gamble is stuck in the middle of family vacation hell. The worst part: it’s not even his family. This will be the last time he ever accepts a free-vacation invitation from his best friend. At this point, he’d be willing to hand over his life savings to get off this crazy ship. So when he catches one of his friend’s cousins sneaking off board, he decides to join her, hijacking her private excursion and nearly blowing her cover. If she gets to leave, so does he.
But what starts off as a secret escape turns into a very real nightmare when their shady tour guide leaves them stranded on an uninhabited island with nothing but the clothes on their backs and no idea how to keep themselves alive.
As hours turn into days, and the weather proves as threatening as their need for food and water, Dillon and Liam must join forces and rely on each other if they have any hope of seeing their families again. Funny thing: sometimes in life, the end of the rope is when you discover everything you value has been in front of you all along.

Now and Then and Always by Melissa Tagg
Maple Valley #1
“It was just a house. Just a craggy old house in a hidden grove, shuttered and still . . . ”
Last year, after traumatic circumstances forced her from her job as a nanny, Mara Bristol finally found a place to belong—the winsome Everwood Bed & Breakfast at the edge of Maple Valley, Iowa. For months, she’s helped its owner, Lenora, maintain the ramshackle property despite their shortage of guests. But when Lenora fails to return from a month-long trip and the bank threatens foreclosure, Mara worries she’s once again alone . . . abandoned . . . about to lose the only true home she’s ever known.
Detective Marshall Hawkins is no closer to whole today than he was two years ago . . . the day his daughter died. Between his divorce, debilitating migraines, and a dependence on medication, his life is falling apart. And when a reckless decision on the job propels him into administrative leave, he has no other plan but to get in his truck and drive. A one-night stay at the Everwood was supposed to be just that. But there’s something about the old house—or maybe its intriguing caretaker—that pulls him in.
Together, Mara and Marshall set out to save the Everwood. But its secrets run deeper than they could’ve imagined. As they renovate the house and search for its missing owner, they’ll each confront the pain that brought them to the Everwood in the first place . . . and just maybe discover a faith and love to help them carry on.

The Art of Rivers by Janet W. Ferguson
A Coastal Hearts Novel
Rivers Sullivan bears both visible and invisible scars—those on her shoulder from a bullet wound and those on her heart from the loss of her fiancé during the same brutal attack. Not even her background as an art therapist can help her regain her faith in humanity. Still, she scrapes together the courage to travel to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she’s inherited from her fiancé. When she stumbles upon recovering addicts running her gallery, she’s forced to reckon with her own healing.
After the tragic drowning of his cousin, James Cooper Knight spends his days trying to make up for his past mistakes. He not only dedicates his life to addiction counseling, but guilt drives him to the water, searching for others who’ve been caught unaware of the quickly rising tides of St. Simons. When he rescues a peculiar blond woman and her sketch pad from a sandbar, then delivers this same woman to his deceased grandmother’s properties, he knows things are about to get even more complicated.
Tragic circumstances draw Cooper and Rivers closer, but they fight their growing feelings. Though Cooper’s been sober for years, Rivers can’t imagine trusting her heart to someone in recovery, and he knows a relationship with her will only rip his family further apart. Distrust and guilt are only the first roadblocks they must overcome if they take a chance on love.

Liz doesn’t have time for teenagers and her track record with men is abysmal, but an unlikely friendship forms between the three.
When her former boyfriend is charged with assault, Liz is called to testify against him. But he knows the darkest secrets of her life—secrets she’d hoped to keep buried forever, and he’s ready to reveal them. April 8, 2019 at 12:15 pm
As a self-diagnosed cover snob, I have to admit that the quality of these indie publications is fantastic. First looks matter and these are all inviting and enticing! I’ve previously been put off by dowdy covers, but these are all superb.
I’ve also learnt that independent publishing allows authors to push the boat out at little; traditional publishing houses can get samey and safe. It’s good to shake things up every now and then.
I can also attest to the quality of the writing – Sibella Giorello is a literary giant and I’d read her shopping list if she published it. Jennifer Rodewald is also a reliably excellent read.
Thank you for showcasing these authors, I’m slowly putting my prejudices aside.
April 8, 2019 at 3:45 pm
Lydia » Yes to everything you said! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
April 10, 2019 at 3:01 am
Lydia, what a wonderful note. Today is my birthday and you gave me a really sweet gift. As for my shopping list, my husband says nobody can read my handwriting… 🙂 Thanks again, Lydia.
April 11, 2019 at 12:44 am
Thanks, Lydia! Indie does allow us to venture out a bit. Jennifer is great! She’s one of my critique partners, and her writing is always stellar.
Blessings

May 22, 2019 at 9:56 pm
Jenny’s books are fantastic!
April 9, 2019 at 5:44 am
I tried to choose a favorite cover and couldn’t do it. I tried to pick *three* favorite covers, and I still couldn’t do it. Every one of these covers appeals to me in a unique way.
Rel, you mentioned the author having completely creative control, and wondered if that was a big contributor to the beauty / success of these covers. I’d say yes, definitely. I love how each author brought something fresh to the cover game. These book don’t all look alike, and that makes me smile. Melissa Tagg’s is lovely and so unique! I’m drooling over Catherine West’s beach. The Waves by Amy Matayo makes all sorts of promises to the reader. I could go on and on about each one. (I hope Aaron chimes in!)
To be honest, traditionally published covers have felt generic to me for some time. “Generic” isn’t bad in the sense that a cover tells readers what to expect, but it takes originality (and artistic talent!) to make a cover stand out. Thank you for posting (and for including When He Found Me). Every book here appeals to me 🙂
April 11, 2019 at 1:16 am
So true!
May 22, 2019 at 10:00 pm
Oh, Victoria! Yes! The authors know their story best so I think that translates to their choice of cover AND they don’t all look alike! That is the beauty of indie covers, in my opinion.
The repetition of cover design and themes does seem to an issue traditional house seems to face. I love seeing indie authors change things up.
April 9, 2019 at 5:55 am
I love this covers! As The Light Fades is one that I want to read!
April 9, 2019 at 11:56 pm

Wow…what a beautiful collection! I already own Knox…and can’t wait to read it! And Melissa Tagg’s new one is a given. Even though this cover is definitely beautiful, it could be ugly and tattered and I’d still have to read it. 😉
Beyond these, the two that caught my attention in this article were The Art of Rivers by Janet W. Ferguson and Windswept by Julie Carobini. I have not read anything be either author yet. Julie’s cover is visually stunning and causes me to want to pick up the book even without reading the blurb on the back (and I regularly choose books based on the blurb, not the cover). And Janet’s cover is so inviting. 🙂

Hope you get to enjoy Janet and Julie’s books. They are both excellent writers, Ronya.

Ooo, how to choose??? Melissa’s and Janet’s are on my list for sure! IAs the Light Fades sounds great, and I’ve heard only good things about the Raleigh Harmon series!

Oh…I just LOVE this post! And these gorgeous books!
I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. But seriously?!!
IMO, that is probably the number one thing that a lot of Indie published books have going against them.
But, on the flip side, there are many more that have absolutely beautiful covers.
I’d have a hard time picking one book at of all of these, they all appeal to me, for various reasons! I’ve read “The Kiss Dare” but none of the others…yet. (I hope to remedy that in the near future! 😉 )
Thanks for sharing these!

I’m with you, Rosalyn Indie books seem to make a cover work for them or against them!

I love the covers and the books. Melissa Tagg and Susan May Warren’s books are always in my TBR pile. I’ve never read Jessica Kate. And oh my! Fearless – absolutely love the cover and cannot wait to read!
Blessings!

Hope you are well on your way through Fearless now, Alena! It’s in my TBR.

I would love to read Knox!

I have read Knox which, of course, was great! I have also read When He Found Me which I loved. It is a very unique story which I’m going to recommend to my teenage granddaughter.
I would most like to read Now and Then and Always because I know I like Melissa Tagg. But The Wind Will Howl by Sibella Giorello, Windswept by Julie Carobini, The Art of Rivers by Janet Ferguson and The Light Fades by Catherine West look good too!

I’d love to read Now and Then and Always by Melissa Tagg. Also, Knox by Susan May Warren, and pretty much all the rest of them. There are a bunch of amazing covers and great-sounding books here, Rel! Thanks for showcasing them!

Wow – what a lot of choices. So glad to see all these new books coming out. I am keen to read Melissa Tagg’s Now and then and always.

I have Knox (not read it yet because of ARC obligations), but I always have these on my TBR List – Catherine West & my local author Janet Ferguson. I’ve added Melissa Tagg & Julie Carobini to my TBR List now, too! I agree that all these covers are outstanding & really grab your attention! I think we all agree, we really are drawn in first by the cover.

I’ve already pre-ordered Melissa’s and Tamara’s and am so excited to read them. There are definitely some others on this post that I need to check out, though!

The Wind Will Howl would definitely be my first choice, but I already bought that one. The next one that I really want to read is Now and Then and Always by Melissa Tagg.
