The Writer

Why do you tell stories?

Because I’m a storyteller and feel it’s what God has called me to do as a part of ministering His hope and truth to others.

Your favourite place to read

Anywhere, but I especially like my wrap-around porch

Best meal of the day

Brunch. I’m not an early breakfast person usually, so a late breakfast/early lunch suits me just fine.

Most beloved childhood book

The Naughty Bunny

If your life was a TV show, what would it be?

Probably a variety show like the old Carol Burnett Show – lots of little skits and an all-star cast supporting and encouraging each other, with lots of laughter.

Whose music inspires you?

Music inspires all the way across the board and from many people. I’m a particular fan of classical piano music, but love so many others it would be impossible to choose.

What ice-cream flavour would you be?

Something with chocolate

The most recent novel you read

The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers

What’s your current book recommendation?

The Mayflower Bride by Kimberly Woodhouse

Name a book character you can’t forget

Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind

Ireland

The Book

In Places Hidden

On her way to San Francisco to find her brother, Caleb, who went missing three months ago, Camrianne Coulter meets Judith and Kenzie, who both have their own mysteries to solve in the booming West Coast city. The women decide to help each other, including rooming together and working at Kenzie’s cousin’s chocolate factory.

Camri’s search for her brother, an attorney, leads her deep into the political corruption of the city–and into the acquaintance of Patrick Murdock, a handsome Irishman who was saved from a false murder charge by Caleb. Patrick challenges all of Camri’s privileged beliefs, but he knows more about what happened to her brother than anyone else. Together, they move closer to the truth behind Caleb’s disappearance. But as the stakes rise and threats loom, will Patrick be able to protect Camri from the dangers he knows lie in the hidden places of the city?

What was the working title?

IN PLACES HIDDEN

Describe your book in 5 adjectives

An intriguing, historical, fast-paced, spiritually encouraging, love story.

Which character did you enjoy writing most?

My focal character Camrianne.

Which character gave you the most grief?

None really gave me grief. I plan out my characters in detail, but give them the freedom to be who they will and it always comes together.

What emotions do you think your story will generate in readers?

Regret – for how easily we judge one another, Hope – for how God can work in any situation for His good

What emotions did you experience while writing this story?

Our country was going through and continues to go through such racial strife, and while this book wasn’t focused on that it was very evident in my research for San Francisco in 1905. It made me think of how Solomon said there’s nothing new. Racial strife and prejudices have been alive as long as mankind has been on earth. It makes me very sad to see how ugly we can be toward one another.

How do you choose your characters names?

For this book I used the first names of a dear friend’s grandchildren. Other times I go through cemeteries and census records, phone books and pick up names on book tour or speaking events.

  4. Nope, but I hear it’s beautiful. Wouldn’t mind going there via Mrs. Peterson’s book, though.

  5. Yes in 1986, on our honeymoon my husband and I drove Hwy 1 most the way to San Francisco. We walked along Pier 39 and looked across the water and saw Alcatraz. We drove up the famous road which I can not recall the name of right now and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge. That was the one and only time I was in San Francisco, a very windy city.

They came back in service the day we left but we didn’t have a chance to ride them. I would love to go back. One of my favorite movies is “Foul Play” which is set there.

  12. Yes! My hubby and I went two years ago in October of 2016 for our anniversary vacation. I think my favorite part was riding a cable car down to the waterfront and spending the day there.
