He Needed Peace…

Solicitor Tom Finchley has spent his life using his devious intellect to solve the problems of others. As for his own problems, they’re nothing that a bit of calculated vengeance can’t remedy. But that’s all over now. He’s finally ready to put the past behind him and settle down to a quiet, uncomplicated life. If only he could find an equally uncomplicated woman.

She Wanted Adventure…

Former lady’s companion Jenny Holloway has just been given a modest independence. Now, all she wants is a bit of adventure. A chance to see the world and experience life far outside the restrictive limits of Victorian England. If she can discover the fate of the missing Earl of Castleton while she’s at it, so much the better.

From the gaslit streets of London to the lush tea gardens of colonial India, Jenny and Tom embark on an epic quest–and an equally epic romance. But even at the farthest edges of the British Empire, the past has a way of catching up with you…

My take:~

My fascination for all stories Mimi Matthews was increased by journeying with her wonderful characters on an epic journey via steamship and railway, from London through Egypt and the Suez Canal, in order to reach their final destination – Dehli, India. The attention to detail in A Modest Independence was exquisite and fascinating, regarding travel arrangements, social mores, apparel choices, and the cultural implications of colonisation. The delightfully unique romance of two voraciously independent souls, both with no desire to marry and opposing dreams about their futures, was equally satisfying. Jenny and Tom wrestle so authentically with their attraction and care for the other, as it conflicts with their long held individual plans and dreams, it is as much a highlight as the most romantic of moments – the ultimate joy being Matthews’s care not to diminish either of them in the process. Propriety, mystery, and romance abound in another excellent love story that I’m now enjoying in audiobook form, despite reading it only a month or so ago! If you haven’t read any of the Parish Orphans of Devon, I recommend immediate rectification! Look for my reviews of A Convenient Fiction and the soon to be released The Winter Companion shortly here on the blog.

A Modest Independence is a general market read. I purchased my own ebook and audiobook copies.
