Synopsis:~
As a former field surgeon in Afghanistan, Heather Fontaine is used to life-or-death situations. She just didn’t expect them to follow her home. When she returns from a party to find that someone has broken into her house–and threatened her friends–she assumes it is the stalker who has been following her and creeping her out. She hopes to find safety and peace of mind by leaving the city and hiding out in a small town. But trouble has followed her even there.
Luckily, a stalker isn’t the only one watching Heather. Travis Walker has been secretly watching out for her for weeks. As owner of his own security agency, it’s what he does. Together, Travis and Heather must figure out who wants her dead–and why–before it’s too late.
Bestselling and award-winning author Lynette Eason will have you looking over your shoulder as you dive into this fast-paced, suspense-filled story about losing control and finding something even better.
Necee’s take:~
“It’s time to use some of those military skills you’ve got that will allow us to work smarter, not harder.”
Wow…Lynette Eason knows how to write a thrilling, romantic suspense with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. From beginning until the very end, I was riveted by these characters and the mystery of this story. Settled at home after completing her time in the military, surgeon Heather Fontaine realizes she has a stalker. However, her extremely independent nature keeps her from asking for help. She tries to disappear to stay safe and she wants to protect her friends, too. I was a little frustrated with how much she pushed her friends away, but I could relate with not wanting to put anyone in danger if I was in her shoes. I loved seeing her faith stretched and how much she grew in this story.
“Once again, she placed one foot in front of the other, begging God to protect her.”
We’ve met her band of friends in the earlier books (Danger Never Sleeps series). They have great camaraderie and would do anything to help each other. I related to the depth of their friendships, being prior military myself. So, when Travis Walker and this band of friends step into help, I enjoyed their dedication to helping a friend be safe. Travis was the swoony kind of guy who stole my heart in this book. He was protective, but I really appreciated how much he respected and helped Heather as a friend. She was smart and beautiful, but struggled trusting others. I appreciated seeing them work together, not only with the mystery, but also in their relationship. There was emotional baggage that they had to work through, but I was enamored with how well they handled it. Eason has a great way of drawing faith into the struggles of her characters, which really brings them to life for her readers.
If you love a good romantic mystery, I can highly recommend Active Defense. It could be read as a standalone pretty easily, but I’ve enjoyed how the whole series ties in with this group of friends. I think this is my favorite book so far, too. It was a rollercoaster ride of suspense for sure!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I would probably choose Gabe Chavez (Lynn Blackburn’s series) or Travis Archer (Karen Witemeyer) or one of the St. John guys (Lynette Eason). It’s so hard to choose!! 😀

I don’t know who I’d pick to protect me…

Any of Ronie Kendig’s characters would do nicely (especially Canyon Metcalfe) and I wouldn’t mind the ladies of Zulu joining my protective team either. 🙂

Ha! Why does your choice not surprise me?! 🙂

I just finished reading Polaris Rising and would pick Marcus Loch to be my protector as he is not only intelligent, street-smart, and strong, but loyal and trustworthy.

I honestly don’t know who I would choose since they all have such different characteristics.

I would choose either someone from Lynette Eason’s novels or Lynn Blackburn’s novels. Active Defense sounds like a page turner. Thanks for the chance!

I would pick any of the heroes from Dee Henderson’s O’Mally series. Definitely sure that any of those guys could handle anything.

I’d love to borrow your Sherlock for protection. I wouldn’t mind Ty Porter either.

I’d agree but there is the fact that some of Sherlock’s mysteries have too many things happen that I wouldn’t want to happen, lol.

Ha! Sherlock’s bark is definitely worse than his bite 🙂

Tox would be amazing. Any of Ronie’s handsome heroes would be ideal.

Hmmm….I’m not sure. Maybe Gale from the Hunger Games, or Edward Cullen from Twilight? Those are kind of cheesy, though.
