historical romance

Dark Road Home

Bethany House

The Story

Ana Kavanagh’s only memories of home are of fire and pain. As a girl she was the only survivor of a terrible blaze, and years later she still struggles with her anger at God for letting it happen.

At a nearby parish she meets and finds a kindred spirit in Eoghan Hamilton, who is struggling with his own anger–his sister, Cara, betrayed him by falling in love with one of his enemies. Cast aside by everyone, Eoghan longs to rejoin the Fenians, a shadowy organization pushing for change back in Ireland. But gaining their trust requires doing some favors–all of which seem to lead back to Ana. Who is she and who is searching for her? As dark secrets from Ana’s past begin to come to light, Eoghan must choose which road to follow–and where to finally place his trust.

Brief physical description

My hero’s name is Eoghan (pronounced “Owen”). He’s the lean, muscular type, stubborn, with a fiery temper to match his russet hair. Thankfully, he’s also steadfast and loyal, and he loves to tease.Kenneth Branagh

Ana is the opposite. She’s quiet and modest and prefers to remain in the background. Though she’s tiny in stature, she possesses an inner strength that immediately fascinates Eoghan.

Resembles…

It’s very important to me to have a clear picture in my head of my main characters before I start writing. For Eoghan, I pictured a young Kenneth Branagh because of the intensity in his eyes

For Ana, I pictured Emma Watson for her youth and natural beauty. Also, she has a sweet innocence that I think fits the character.

Strengths and weaknesses

Both of my characters have strengths and weaknesses that complement the other. For Ana, I gave her physical weakness that translates into how she views herself. Burned as a child, she’s never been able to see past her scars to her own inner beauty. Eoghan, on the other hand, feels it is his choices that have made Emma Watsonhim unworthy and unlovable. As an idealist, he’s very driven once he undertakes a cause, and in DARK ROAD HOME, his cause is Ana.

Quirk (if any)

Ana and Eoghan are very caring individuals. They like to help people, and at the onset of the book, they each think they are helping the other. Unfortunately, their attempts only wind up putting the other in very awkward, even dangerous, situations.

Your inspiration for the character

Oddly enough, the inspiration for Eoghan came from a young man I met while working in youth ministry. Though he was charismatic and intense, he was also desperate and searching. I always sensed that he was pulled in two directions—the world and the Lord. I still pray for him often.

The inspiration for Ana came from a conglomeration of sources, but mostly from a young woman very close to me who has never understood how beautiful she is, both inside and out.

Background to the story

DARK ROAD HOME is the sequel to NO SAFE HARBOR. It begins where the first book left off, with Eoghan feeling abandoned and betrayed by his sister, and desperate to re-join his beloved Fenians. Also back is the mysterious Celt and his workings behind the scenes (expect more danger, more intrigue, and more information about his ulterior motives!).

As for Ana, the reader only got a glimpse of her history in the first book of the series. Book two reveals the truth behind her tortured past, and gives added insight into how her story ties to that of Cara and Rourke before her.

Thanks Elizabeth!
