This character spotlight comes with a deep apology to the lovely Morgan L. Busse! I discovered Morgan’s spotlight on her leading characters from Mark of the Raven as I was going through some old emails, so while I’m delighted to share with you today, I should have done so months ago. That said, it’s never too late to discover a new author or new series and Morgan’s Ravenwood Saga is not to be missed. You can dive in before the second novel, Flight of the Raven, releases in April!
Meet Selene & Damien…
Selene Ravenwood
Physical Stats
Height: 5’8
Hair colour & style: Long black hair with a blue sheen to it (like a raven)
Eye colour: Dark brown
Dress sense: As a lady, she dresses in long gowns. When she is on her missions, she dresses in dark pants, soft-skin books, black tunic, cloak, and face scarf, along with her dual swords.
Resembles…
Definitely Adria Arjona, with that long black hair, dark eyes, and earnest look.
Can’t live without…
She’s a dreamwalker and she can’t live without dreaming (although she tries to go without it for a while).
Strengths
Able to keep her emotions under control, is a critical thinker.
Vulnerabilities
She loves her sisters and will do anything to protect them.
Passions
Doing what is right.
What book or movie would they recommend?
Hmmm, if she were in this world, I think she would find the Hunger Games interesting (Katniss’s willingness to save her sister).
Your inspiration for the character
A picture I found on Pinterest where a young woman is standing before a door with a sword in each hand as if she has to make a decision.
Background to the story
I saw this scene in my head where this woman is standing over the bedside of a man, and her purpose there is to assassinate him, but she is wavering. So I’m asking myself, “Who is she?” “Why is she here?” “How did she get to this point?” “Who is the man?” “And what is going to happen next.”
Damien Maris
Physical Stats
Height: 5’11
Hair colour & style: Short black hair
Eye colour: Intense blue eyes
Dress sense: Usually in a tunic, pants, boots, and a black or dark sleeveless jacket along with a blue cloak.
Resembles…
David Giuntoli from Grimm
Can’t live without…
He prefers to stay near his home by the sea since his gift involves raising water.
Strengths
He’s a capable, compassionate man
Vulnerabilities
His compassion can also be his weakness. As a leader, he has to make tough choices.
Passions
Peace and unity.
What book or movie would they recommend?
I think Damien would enjoy the Lord of the Rings, something epic where an ordinary person saves the day.
Your inspiration for the character
I wanted a character who would be as strong as Selene, but opposite of her in some respects, so as the story progressed, when they work together, they are stronger than when they are apart.
Thank you, Morgan!
Lady Selene is the heir to the Great House of Ravenwood and the secret family gift of dreamwalking. As a dreamwalker, she can enter a person’s dreams and manipulate their greatest fears or desires. For the last hundred years, the Ravenwood women have used their gift of dreaming for hire to gather information or to assassinate.
As she discovers her family’s dark secret, Selene is torn between upholding her family’s legacy–a legacy that supports her people–or seeking the true reason behind her family’s gift.
Her dilemma comes to a head when she is tasked with assassinating the one man who can bring peace to the nations, but who will also bring about the downfall of her own house.
One path holds glory and power, and will solidify her position as Lady of Ravenwood. The other path holds shame and execution. Which will she choose? And is she willing to pay the price for the path chosen?
Morgan L. Busse writes fantasy for the adult market. She is the author of the Follower of the Word series, including Daughter of Light, Christy and Carol Award finalist. Morgan lives on the West Coast with her husband and four children. You can find out more about Morgan at www.morganlbusse.com

Lord of the Rings, of course. My kids love Harry Potter. One of my daughters has started reading Mary Weber’s books and loves them.

Lord of the Rings has been an all consuming love since I was a kid! The books, the movies (extended editions of course) and anything else I could get my hands on. Tolkien’s amazing amount of world building really shaped my love of the fantasy genre. Brandon Sanderson is a newer find for me and he has easily become a favorite.

Lord of the Rings movies have been binge-watched by my family and myself so many times we can all quote from the movie. I’ve also named my hamsters after the characters.

I haven’t read the whole series yet, but I am enjoying Patrick Carr’s “The Darkwater Saga,” and I loved Mary Pearson’s “The Remnant Chronicles.”
