For now, enjoy meeting Meg and Ben!

A Distance to GrandMeg Pero has been assisting her photographer father since she was big enough to carry his equipment, so when he dies she is determined to take over his profession–starting with fulfilling the contract he signed to serve on an Army survey of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1871. What she doesn’t realize is that the leader of the expedition is none other than the man she once refused to marry.

Captain Ben Coleridge would like nothing more than to leave without the woman who broke his heart, but he refuses to wait even one more day to get started. This survey is a screen for another, more personal mission, one he cannot share with any member of his team.

As dangers arise from all sides, including within the survey party, Meg and Ben must work together to stay alive, fulfill their duties, and, just maybe, rekindle a love that neither had completely left behind.

Meet Ben & Meg

Physical Stats

Height: Ben is six foot; Meg a tidy five foot six inches.

Hair colour & style: Meg has slightly wavy, long, pale-gold hair. She generally wears it up in a loose bun inside a broad-brimmed straw hat that’s seen better days. Ben has light brown hair with gold highlights from the sun, thick and straight. As he’s a cavalry officer, he tends to wear it a little short.

Eye colour: Ben’s eyes are blue-grey, like a river; Meg’s are spring-green, and they crinkle up when she smiles.

Favorite accessory or clothing style: Meg has a set of bespoke riding habits, with breeches under them. They work perfectly for trying to get those tricky shots out on a canyon rim or under a waterfall. Ben looks rather fine in his Army uniform, the castle of the Corps of Engineers winking in brass on the crown of his hat.

Resembles…

Ben resembles Chris Pine. Meg resembles Julianne Hough.

Julianne Hough

Can’t live without…

Meg can’t live without her cameras, especially the one that allows her to take the two pictures for a stereograph. Ben always considered himself self-sufficient, but he’s beginning to believe he can’t live without Meg at his side.

Strengths

Ben’s greatest strength is his determination. He has defied the wishes of his powerful father to become an Army engineer and blaze trails out West. Meg’s greatest strength is flexibility. If she can’t accomplish a goal one way, she’ll find another.

Vulnerabilities

Ben has the greatest respect for his father, so defying him came at a price. Now his father has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and he’ll risk his command and his future to learn the truth. With the death of her own father, Meg found herself a woman in a man’s world. She has true skill as a photographer, but she constantly has to justify her position to ply her trade.

Passions

Ben is passionate about opening the West to settlers, charting paths into the wilderness. He knows many of his breaks in life came from being his father’s son. He wants others to have the same opportunities. Meg is passionate about her craft. She’s worked hard to learn how to compose shots, prepare the glass, create negatives and then photographs. Nothing is more important than getting the shot.

What book would they recommend?

Ben enjoys a good adventure yarn like those written by James Fenimore Cooper. Meg is rather fond of Charles Dickens.

Your inspiration for the character

I generally don’t have inspirations for characters, unless I happen to be basing them on someone I know personally (friends or family). Meg and Ben grew out of the story itself. They were the right people to explore the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1871.

Background to the story

I set out to write a story about a woman photographer in the West. It seemed like a good idea. 😊 I had considered having her explore and photograph the Columbia River Gorge, not far from where I spent 27 years of my life, but the timing wasn’t right. So, what was something big, important, and challenging for her to photograph? Why, the Grand Canyon! The rest of the story flowed from there.
