Today the spotlight shines on……………………………………………………Hemiunu
Tracy Higley’s Seven Wonders Novels have me totally enthralled! With fascinating historical detail and intricate characterisation, Tracy weaves stories of intrigue and romance around history’s most amazing engineering and architectural achievements.
I love her character, Hemi and am delighted to share Tracy’s insight into the man who is both engineer and musician.
Over to you, Tracy:~
Hemi is a muscular ancient Egyptian. He is clean-shaven (including his head!) as most men of the era. He is too busy to concern himself with the jewelry and makeup that many men use, however.
Think Yul Brynner in The Ten Commandments.
Strengths and weaknesses
Hemi is an engineer, and he’s all about precision, order, and productivity. When a series of murders interferes with his life’s work of building the Great Pyramid, he has no choice but to track down the killer. Along the way, his rigid way of life gets challenged by some free-thinking and free-spirited people with strange beliefs about God.
Quirk (if any)
Hemi is almost obsessive about having things in order. Everything is about math, angles, and order with him. But he has this hidden part of himself that he doesn’t let people see – the musician. In private, he lets himself get carried away by his music.
Your inspiration for the character.
I think Hemi came from a place within myself, actually. I have always struggled with placing relationships as a higher priority than projects and tasks. The choices that Hemi faces are ones that I have had to deal with as well, and an area where I feel God is still teaching me much about how to fulfill his purpose for my life without making that purpose my reason for living.
Background to the story
In the blistering desert sands, tens of thousands toil to raise the Great Pyramid of Giza. Hemiunu, the pyramid’s meticulous architect, is consumed by the massive project and his allegiance to his cousin Khufu, Pharaoh of Egypt. But when a sadistic killer known as Anubis begins preying upon Hemi’s closest friends, a dark secret tangled in love and mystery threatens to stir up a past Hemi cannot forget and uncover a secret he can no longer deny – a secret that may well destroy an entire kingdom.
