Natalie Tubberville has always dreamed of more than her wealthy father could provide. Not in material ways but from the sweat of her own brow. While determined to make it on her own, when her daddy buys a controlling interest in a Memphis Detective Agency, she leaps at the chance to prove her investigative skills.
Matt Hogan’s life is in turmoil. His last client turned out to be a crook which hurt his reputation and his back pocket. He has no choice but to accept Eddie Tubberville’s offer to finance his detective Agency, even with the horrifying condition that Eddie’s naive, loquacious and interfering daughter become his partner. If only he was in a position to say, “Over my dead body!”.
While Natalie and Matt square off against each other, the subject of their first assignment, Yasmine Patel, is running for her life. Flown to America from her homeland Pakistan for an arranged marriage, Yasmine discovers her fiance is hardly the upstanding man her parents’ believe him to be. Afraid her new found faith will further alienate her family, Yasmine searches for the young American man who changed her life and her heart then left without a word.
Controlling Interest reintroduces PI Matt Hogan from Elizabeth White’s previous novel, Off the Record. With her trademark Southern charm and humour, Elizabeth has created wonderfully engaging characters in Matt, Natalie and Yasmine. Matt has been exposed to the seedier side of life, personally and professionally, yet his fledgling faith lends him an endearing vulnerability as he tries to follow a new path. Enthusiasm and energy oozes from Natalie’s every pore as she gloves up to champion Yasmine’s cause but needs Matt’s wits and experience to prevent her from damaging their sensitive investigation and endangering lives. Witty and amusing dialogue is one of Elizabeth’s writing gifts and the repartee between Matt and Natalie is no exception. Toss in the mystery surrounding Jasmin’s disappearance, some unusual relatives, Eddie Tubberville’s efforts at romance and Elizabeth White has another hit on her hands.
