First Line Friday: Lisa T. Bergren’s Verity (with giveaway)

First Line Friday

The weekend and First Line Friday (hosted by Hoarding Books) is here! I’m a long time reader of Lisa T. Bergren’s novels and have nearly every one on my bookshelves. Today I’m sharing the first line(s) from her second novel in The Sugar Baron’s Daughters series, Verity. This series is set in the West Indies in the 1770s, fascinating in location, era, and characters. I love being taken on a journey to another place and time and Lisa’s prose always immerses me in the sights, scents, and smells of the location she is describing.

What first line have you read this week?

The Book

Verity

After leaving England behind for a new life in the West Indies with her sisters, Verity Banning wants something to call her own. Her affinity for animals inspires her to set up a business importing horses, as well as other goods in demand by the island residents. But when she arrives in the Colonies to purchase her goods, unexpected news of Captain Duncan McKintrick awaits her—as does the captain’s handsome brother, Ian—whose sympathies lie with the fledgling Patriot cause.

As the great-granddaughter of a British general and friend to many Loyalists, Verity believed all she wanted was a peaceful resolution. But both the Patriots and the impassioned Ian McKintrick are steadily laying claim to her heart. When faced with the decision of what—and for whom—she will fight, can she set her feet on a new path despite the danger that awaits?

Have a fabulous weekend, friends!

  1. I’m currently in 1943 Berlin with Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his beloved Maria. I’m only about a quarter way through My Dearest Dietrich by Amanda Barrattt but it’s incredibly rich with emotion and details.

    • Great choice! I recently finished My Dearest Dietrich, wonderfully written and encouraging despite horrific circumstances.

  2. I loved Keturah! I have Verity on my Net Galley shelf. I must find time to read it!

  3. I’ve been reading more contemporary fiction lately, but looking back at my Goodreads list it looks like I last visited colonial America in The Captive Heart by Michelle Griep.

  4. I’ve been in the WWI and WWII world lately!

  5. I just finished Whose Waves These Are, so I’ve spent some time in mid-1900s Maine. Captivating place!

  6. Hi Rel,
I love Lisa’s books! I’m actually re-reading both Keturah and Verity because I’m getting ready for Selah. I’m on Lisa’s proofreading team to pre-read it for her. I’ll be getting it on Monday! I’m really looking forward to it.
I think I have read all of Lisa’s books. She’s actually one of the first authors I helped being on a street/launch team. She has such a diverse collection of books.

  7. Mid-1900’s Maine in Whose Waves These Are by Amanda Dykes. It was a lovely story!

  8. Happy Friday! Today I’m sharing the first lines from Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner: “Four years ago, on my thirtieth birthday, I had two very important realizations.”

I just finished More Than Words Can Say by Karen Witemeyer set in 1896 and The King’s Mercy by Lori Benton set in 1747-48 and Crossing at Cypress Creek by Pam Hillman set in 1792.
    I love historicals!

  11. Danielle Hammelef

I recently traveled back in time to 1969 when I read Summer of ’69. I got an eye-opening look at the Vietnam Era.

  12. London and Vancouver Island 1862 were both settings in Jody Hedlund’s A Reluctant Bride, which is a phenomenal novel.

  13. I recently visited 1788 France through Allison Pittman’s The Seamstress.
