Morgan Busse’s second Ravenwood Saga novel, Flight of the Raven, has fantasy readers rushing to read the ongoing story of Selene Ravenwood as she adjusts to her new life as the wife of Lord Damien Maris while in exile. World building and unique characters are Morgan’s speciality so be sure to get your hands on this series, beginning with Mark of the Raven. I’m so glad to feature Flight of the Raven for my First Line Friday (hosted by Hoarding Books) as there aren’t a lot of fantasy novels in the CBA, and Morgan is one of the best.

First Line (s)
Short, simple, and very descriptive. I think it’s pretty clear there won’t be smooth sailing for this dreamwalker!
Selene Ravenwood, once the heir to House Ravenwood, is now an exile. On the run and free of her family’s destiny, Selene hopes to find the real reason her family was given the gift of dreamwalking. But first she must adapt to her new life as wife to Lord Damien Maris, the man she was originally assigned to kill.
While adjusting to her marriage and her home in the north, her power over dreams begins to grow. As the strongest dreamwalker to exist in ages, her expanding power attracts not only nightmares but the attention of the Dark Lady herself.
With a war looming on the horizon and a wicked being after her gift, Selene is faced with a choice: embrace the Dark Lady’s offer, or search out the one who gave her the gift of dreamwalking. One path offers power, the other offers freedom. But time is running out, and soon her choice will be made for her.
Morgan L. Busse is the author of the Follower of the Word series and the steampunk series The Soul Chronicles, the second book of which, Awakened, won the 2018 Carol Award for Speculative Fiction. During her spare time she enjoys playing games, taking long walks, and dreaming about her next novel. She and her family live in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Visit her online at www.morganlbusse.com.

Happy Friday! My first line is from “When He Returns” by author Kimberly Rae Jordan, which I haven’t started, but hope to start reading soon:
Prologue
“Dalton Callaghan stared at the gleaming wood casket at the front of the chapel, the profile of his friend just barely visible over the edge as he lay there.”

The beautiful, creative worlds found in the fantasy books draw me in.

The imaginative worlds and characters in fantasy novels have made them exciting to me. I enjoy how they completely pull me out of my own world when I need to escape most.

I like that fantasy novels can have elements of our world, but with extraordinary things (e.g magic/ powers and mythical creatures).

World building is one of my favorite parts of fantasy! I love to immerse myself into whatever story I’m reading and fantasy really lends itself to that. Tolkien, Sanderson and Martin come to mind and some of my personal fantasy favorites.
