Synopsis:~
Georgana Woodall dreams of freedom—freedom from her past and freedom from her secret. She has been living on her father’s ship for years, disguised as a cabin boy named “George.” But hiding her true self is becoming more difficult, and she yearns to break free of her life on the sea. She’s already missed too many seasons in London, and her chances of being welcomed back into polite society and finding a suitable husband are slipping away.
Lieutenant Dominic Peyton has no time in his life for love, not with his dedication to His Majesty’s Royal Navy claiming his full attention. Determined to prove himself to his new captain, he strives to be an exemplary officer and leader. When Lieutenant Peyton sees the captain’s cabin boy being harassed by the crew, he takes the boy under his wing.
Georgana quickly loses her heart to Dominic’s compassion and care, but needing to maintain her disguise as a cabin boy, she is convinced nothing can come of her affection.
Georgana’s Secret is about two hearts yearning to find a safe harbor, and possibly, a lasting love.
My take:~
Georgana’s Secret is another delightful read from Regency romance author, Arlem Hawks. Taking to the high seas with a favourite trope of mine – heroine disguised as a boy/man – Hawks provides a romantic and adventurous tale, capturing the harrowing nature of Navy life with a story of danger, determination, and love.
Georgana and Dominic are layered characters, and I was immediately invested in their romance. Anticipation was strong as it was some time into the story before Georgana’s ruse is uncovered by the compassionate and upright Lieutenant. Georgana’s relationship with her father added more authenticity as they strove to care for each other while constrained by maintaining her disguise. This novel is engaging and exciting – a truly absorbing read.
If you loved Angela Elwell Hunt’s Heirs of Cahira O’Connor, this story is perfect for you. I’ve become quite the fan of Arlem Hawks’ writing and have been enjoying her back list and am looking forward to more to come.
With thanks to the publisher and Austenprose for my review copy.
Arlem Hawks began making up stories before she could write. Living all over the Western United States and traveling around the world gave her a love of cultures and people and the stories they have to tell. With her travels came an interest in history, especially the history of her English heritage. When she isn’t writing, Arlem is baking her characters’ favorite foods, sewing Regency dresses, learning how to play the tin whistle, and water coloring. She lives in Arizona with her husband and two children. Having previously published four historical romance novellas, Georgana’s Secret is her debut novel.
