Regina Scott’s Reading Habits (with giveaway)

Regina Scott’s Reading Habits

When is your optimal time to read?

I generally read a little each night before bed, but my special treat is to sleep late on a Saturday or Sunday, then curl up in my favourite chair and read as long as I like.

Are you faithful to a genre, an author, or simply quality writing?

I tend to stay in the historical romance and historical mystery genres, but a great story will pull me into Westerns, science fiction, fantasy, and even paranormals.

Which factors most influence your selection of a book?

First, do I know the author, either having read her work before or met her at a conference or online? Second, the story—I want something uplifting, fast-paced, and with at least a hint of romance.

Your fiction pet peeve?

Books that don’t live up to their blurbs. I’m sure we’ve all been there!

What book have you read this year that you could not put down, and why?

Karen Witemeyer’s The Heart’s Charge. I love her voice, her characters, and her plots.

How do you mark your spot – folded page corner, bookmark, dollar bill, whatever is at hand?

Folded page? Perish the thought! 😊 I have a number of bookmarks I’ve collected over the years, but if one’s not handy, I’ll grab a sticky, a napkin, or a piece of notepaper, whatever is handy and won’t damage the book.

When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you?

Characters I can root for and rich history I can explore will always draw me into a story. If I can’t empathize with the characters or the author doesn’t have a grasp of the time period, I will generally pass.

Snack/drink of choice while reading?

Nothing. I’m not much of a snacker. And I don’t like smudging the pages.

What book cover has really caught your eye?

Melody Carlson’s A Christmas in the Alps. I love mountains!

What book do you wish you had written? Why?

Shelley Adina’s Lady of Devices, a steampunk adventure. I had an idea for a steampunk, but when I read hers, I was in awe of how she effortlessly builds her world.

What are you reading now?

I’m hoping to catch up on Jen Turano’s series, starting with To Steal a Heart.

A View Most Glorious

Headstrong beauty Coraline Baxter dreads being confined to the expectations of “polite society.” Striving to promote women’s rights, she jumps at the life-changing opportunity to scale Mount Rainier and raise awareness for the suffrage movement. But her escapades come with a cost—an arranged marriage to a society man if she fails to reach the summit. She needs a guide to get her to the top.

Nathan Hardee may look like a rough mountain man, but he once ruled the halls of high society. After his father’s financial ruin, Nathan left that life far behind. To help Cora, he agrees to guide her up the mountain, but climbing Rainier will require all of Cora’s strength against the dangers of nature. Will these two unlikely partners be able to conquer the journey and discover that only together is the view most glorious?

Travel to the Pacific Northwest, home of one of America’s most treasured national parks, in this inspiring novel that will carry readers to the top of the mountain in a celebration of adventure and romance, with a heroine and hero as bold as the setting.

What do you love most about this story, or the process of writing this story?

Getting to set it in my own backyard! I’ve written stories set in Regency England, Boston, the Texas panhandle, and pioneer Seattle, but this is the first time I’ve written a story set around Tacoma, Washington, where I grew up, and Mt. Rainier, which lies 45 minutes from my front door. It was thrilling being able to drive to all the places I was writing about and imagine my characters there.

Share a little about one of your characters – what makes them unique?

Nathan Hardee, my hero, once had it all—wealth, respected family, position as a rising physician, beautiful fiancée. His father’s actions wiped all that away, causing him to question everything he’d been taught. Retreating to the wilderness led him back to himself and his Lord. He’s a stronger, better man for it, even if others question his reasoning.

Share a favourite line or paragraph from your book.

“You’ll find I have plenty of stamina and determination, Mr. Hardee. But I can assure you that I have never been good at obeying. You’ll simply have to accustom yourself to the fact.”

Thank you, Regina!
