The Jewel of His Heart by Maggie Brendan

Synopsis:~

Set in 1890s Montana, The Jewel of His Heart finds Juliana drawn to a handsome, gentle sheepherder–but sparks fly when he considers mining, the occupation that lured her father away from his family. Both Josh and Juliana must make a choice–the world’s riches and promises, or the eternal value of love.

My take:~

Maggie Brendan’s sequel to No Place for a Lady tells the story of Josh McBride who is making his own way far from the shadow of his father’s success. Juliana is struggling to make ends meet after the loss of her mother and the two bond from their first meeting. I must admit it took me a a third of the way through to get into the story but I enjoyed the interplay between Juliana and Josh and the details of a sheepherder’s life. Some incidents that impact Juliana are downplayed more than I expected yet Maggie tells a tender romance and it is easy to imagine Montana in the late 1800s from her descriptive prose.
