The Story

Someone is after Dr. Sarah Gordon. They’ve stalked her and set a fire at her home. Trying to recover from the traumatic deaths of her husband and infant daughter is tough enough, but she has no idea what will come next. Her late husband’s best friend and a recovering alcoholic detective are trying to solve the mystery before it’s too late, but both appear to be vying for her affection as well. Sarah finds herself in constant fear as the process plays out.

As the threats on her life continue to escalate, so do the questions: Who is doing this? Why are they after her? And with her only help being unreliable suitors in competition with each other, whom can she really trust?

Introducing Sarah, Bill, & Kyle

Dr. Sarah Gordon

Brief physical description

Sarah is a widowed Emergency Room doctor. She has “dark good looks,” manifested by an olive complexion, dark (almost black) hair, and deep brown eyes.

Resembles

Actress Stacy Martin

Quirks

When she married Harry, who was killed about eight months earlier, along with their two year-old daughter, Sarah got used to shedding the responsibilities of an emergency room doctor when she walked in the door, and letting him make most of the big decisions in their life. Now she’s responsible for everything—including staying alive, as someone wants to hurt or kill her. She’s fallen away from God, and isn’t sure she can even trust the two men who are trying to help her.

Inspiration for the character

Because I’ve had the privilege of working closely with a number of female physicians, I’ve drawn on some of their characteristics for Sarah, but her character is fictitious.

Detective Bill Larson

Brief physical description

He has an average build, has dark hair, is clean-shaven, and doesn’t wear glasses. He almost always wears a suit or sport coat with a dress shirt and tie.

Resembles

Actor Brandon Routh

Quirks

Bill is a recovering alcoholic. His marriage broke up because of his addiction, and he’s trying to get his life back together (and perhaps win back his ex-wife). He’s come back to God as he rehabilitates, but constantly has to guard against reverting to his old ways.

Inspiration for the character

Although I’ve never had a close relationship with an individual who was an alcoholic (either active or recovering), I’ve tended to feature them periodically in my novels. This just seemed the situation to put in another one.

Attorney Kyle Andrews

Brief physical description

Six feet tall, clean-shaven, rust-colored hair cut short, wears rimless glasses.

Resembles

Actor Sam Heughan

Quirks

His fiancé was killed in a freak accident while working on a church project. He was Harry Gordon’s “best friend,” but the question continues to come up whether he’s trying to help Sarah because of that or because he wants to take Harry’s place in their marriage.

Inspiration for the character

Like alcoholics, attorneys seem to keep turning up in my novels. (Perhaps it’s because I play golf weekly with one). Fortunately, I’ve never met one with the characteristics of Kyle Andrews…but I could.

Thanks Richard!
