Synopsis:~
Honorably discharged from the Army after an explosion nearly killed her, former military psychiatrist Brooke Adams has set up shop to help others–but her days of helping military personnel are over. She’s got her own battles to fight from her time overseas, and she’s not equipped to take on more. Former Army Special Ops Sergeant First Class Asher James could handle anything that war sent his way–terrorists, bombs, bullets. The only thing that scares him now is sleep. As the shadows close in, the nightmares begin.
Finally convinced that he needs help, Asher makes an appointment with a counselor, and Brooke is pressed by her boss to take him on. When he arrives at her office she isn’t there–but a dead body is. Brooke is devastated when she walks in, and Asher is a conveniently strong shoulder to cry on. But she can’t take him on as a client after sharing such an intimate and unprofessional moment, can she? And he’s not sure he can handle sharing his deepest fears with such a beautiful woman.
When it becomes clear that Brooke was the real target of the attack–and that her secrets go even deeper than his own–Asher vows to protect her no matter what.
Necee’s Take:~
Wow… I just finished this suspenseful and thrilling read. I believe it is one of the best books that Eason has written in a long time…and I love her books! It had a gripping mystery and was so suspenseful that she had me on the edge of my seat. If you want a rollercoaster ride with a thrilling ending, you’ll want to read this award winning author. Collateral Damage is the first book in her Danger Never Sleeps series. Once you start it, you won’t want to put it down!
At first I wasn’t sure where she was going with a couple different storylines and different viewpoints. However, all of those viewpoints come together beautifully with a message that is so important in today’s world. Where danger and evil can go unseen so easily and criminal activity be happening right on our doorstep. I really can’t go into more without giving away the mystery of this awesome book, so I won’t! You’ll just have to read it for yourself. I did love a few things that I can share though…
I loved the characters, the heart of the story, and nonstop suspense. The romance really starts with two veterans struggling with PTSD helping each other, only to be put right into the cross-hairs of a killer. That really added to the storyline. Another area I loved was the focus on a group of military females and males…how each struggles with deployment. Then, the story carries on after they return to civilian life where they are around other veterans with similar struggles. Eason did a great job in portraying PTSD symptoms and how much it affects real life. Her portrayal of the military has all the action of a Ronie Kendig novel, which added a whole new level to the story! Combine that with Eason’s masterful suspense and you have a truly gripping read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good suspenseful mystery with a message that needs to be addressed. Want to know what that message is? Then run don’t walk to buy Collateral Damage. High praise for this new series. I am looking forward to her next book.
Due to the message of this book it does involve a heavier topic, but I found Eason dealt with it in a way that reminded me of one of my favorite series, her Women of Justice series.
I was graciously provided an advanced reader copy through Revell and NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review. I am giving my honest opinion.
Lynette Eason is the bestselling author of Oath of Honor, as well as the Women of Justice series, the Deadly Reunions series, the Hidden Identity series, and the Elite Guardians series.
