If the Shoe Fits by Sandra D. Bricker

Julianne used to believe in fairy tales; she’s been watching for Prince Charming to come charging in on his white steed ever since the day her mother read her Cinderella for the first time. But she’s never come close to finding the perfect man-instead she’s always tripping over her childhood best friend, Will. And who finds their Prince Charming on a 10-speed bicycle on the other side of the cul de sac? Well… Julianne does. Only she doesn’t have a clue.

She and Will are attorneys now, and they’ve joined up in private practice in a beautiful Cincinnati office building that overlooks the Ohio River. And then one day Julianne is on her way to court, and runs right smack dab into Prince Charming. But when she looks again, all she finds is a metaphoric sign she is certain came straight from Heaven: The Prince’s toolbox has fallen off the back of his truck, and a work boot along with it. What better way for God to grab the attention of a Cinderella-in-training than to show her a glass slipper…errrr, work boot?…waiting to be reunited with its owner?

So she sets out to track down the mysterious Prince Charming. He’s the most gorgeous guy she’s ever seen…and a caring animal rescuer, too. Surely he must be the soul mate God has prepared her for.

But, Julianne’s prince is starting to look less and less charming all the time. No matter how she tries to romanticize him, he just keeps tumbling down off that dumb pedestal. And with the Bar Association dinner coming up that will honor her for her outstanding charity work over the year, Julianne wants so much for her friends and colleagues to see her with someone besides her best friend Will. To make matters worse, Prince Charming has no designs on wearing a penguin suit and attending a stuffy old dinner. With her pride pressing in on her like sticks from a cactus, Julianne sinks to the bottom of the proverbial barrel and actually offers to pay Paul tobe her date.

Julianne is on a collision course with God’s perfect plan for her life…if only she could open her eyes and see it before it’s too late.

Jewel of the Pacific by Linda Lee Chaikin

Amid the looming political crisis in Hawaii, Rafe Easton faces one of the worst crisis he’s ever known.  As a man of determination, independence, and masculine pursuits he suddenly becomes blind and his world ends.  Pride causes him to abandon the upcoming marriage to Eden Derrington and seek medical care in San Francisco.  Through an associate he sends a letter to Eden telling her he left Honolulu to find himself again.  When he never hears from her again he settles into the belief that he was right all along; a helpless man is a bag of bricks around a woman’s neck.

Parker Judson’s niece, the beautiful Bernice “Bunny” Judson, sees her opportunity and makes a play for the one man she’s always wanted, Rafe.

Hurt and angry that Rafe has walked out of her life, Eden knows about his eyesight loss but she never received the letter Rafe sent to her.  In heartbreak she goes with her father Dr. Jerome to Molokai to set up the clinic for lepers. Eden hopes to pick up the shattered pieces of broken plans and begin life anew.  At last she is emotionally free to close the door on the leper colony and allow Rebecca to rest in peace in the presence of the Lord she had trusted.

Eden discovers that during the year she was on Kalawao, not only did Rafe return to Honolulu, be has has rebuilt Hanalei coffee plantation on the Big Island, and is again running for a seat in the legislature.  He is hard at work with the other anti-Royalists to depose the Hawaiian queen and to bring the Hawaiian Islands under the Stars and Stripes.

Rafe’s blindness was only a temporary condition.  Although she’s delighted for Rafe, she discovers that he has no intention of reaching out to her again.  While her lost love affair with Rafe is as painful to her as ever, he is cool and distant, avoiding her to the point of arrogance. Nor has he been romantically idle.  Cousin Candace sadly informs Eden that Rafe is spending most of his time wtih Bernice Judson, and that her husband Keno has heard Parker Judson saying he is hoping for Rafe’s future marriage to his niece. Eden is both hurt and angry.

The clouds of political disaster have arrived overhead.  Eden must decide which side of the upcoming Revolution she is going to support.  Plus she must discover the painful lessons God wants her to learn, and if she will ever find healing for her bruised heart with or without a life that includes Rafe.

David and Bathsheba by Roberta Kells Dorr

David and Bathsheba is a spellbinding story of a gifted king and the woman he loved bu could not have.  Told from Bathsheba’s perspective, author Roberta Kells Dorr bring to life the passion that almost cost David his kingdom and tested a people’s courage and faith in God.

David and Bathsheba is colored richly with details of Bible-era Israel – from the details of the everyday way of life to details of the Jewish religion.  Dorr brilliantly merges reality with folklore as she tells the story of two great characters of the bilblical era. The book starts out with Bathsheba as a young girl and David as a strong willed rebellious military leader.  It details the way they meet and follows them all the way through their difficulties.

Jungle Fire by Dana Mentink

The deadliest animal in the jungle is the two legged kind.

Nina Truman is a missionary nurse, serving in a tiny Guatemalan town not far from the Mexican border.  It’s a fulfilling life, tending to the village poor, a way to serve in the country from which she was adopted. The day she leaves on furlough, is the day her life falls apart. Her bus is ambushed and she must flee from forces who inexplicably wish her dead. Trapped between a ruthless drug lord and his assassins, a corrupt police chief, and colleagues with ulterior motives, her friends may prove just as deadly as her enemies as she uncovers a plot tangled deep in the roots of her own past.

Nina’s only hope of survival lies in the hands of Shaw Wilder, a man who despises missionaries and the God they serve.  His skill is in handling a landmine detection dog, not helping a woman he blames for the death of his sister. When the lethal drug kingpin El Escorpion seeks to capture Nina, and the local police are no help, Shaw has to choose: flee into the Guatemalan jungle with a naive woman who has vowed never to take a life or follow his own spiritual demons and walk away. His choice may leave them both imprisoned in a jungle from which neither will escape.

  1. Aw! How cute is that ‘shoe’ book!? Love it. 🙂

  2. Linda Chaikin is one of my all time faves! But I haven’t read any of that series yet – better put them on my Chrissy list! 🙂

  3. I like all of the covers except for Sandra’s. I think the cover should have better reflected that this is a modern telling of Cinderella. My favorite is actually “David and Bathsheba” but I wish they had at least included her eyes instead of cutting her face in half. I like Dana’s OK as I think it reflects the type of story and the title, although I would have toned down the green a bit. I really enjoy Linda’s books as well. The first book in this series was released by Bethany several years ago titled “For Whom the Stars Shine” and the series was called “Jewel of the Pacific.” I like Jocelyn’s cover, also, but it is pretty similar to the first book in the series. Thanks again, Rel, for keeping everyone updated on the newest in CF.

  4. I found Linda Chaikin’s book on CBD a few weeks ago and absolutely screamed with joy. I’m so looking forward to it. Just need to read the 2nd book sometime between now and April. Will be adding David and Bathsheba to my wish list, it looks good too.

  5. I don’t normally take too much notice of covers, but you’re right about Dana’s. One day I’m going to have time to read all these wonderful offerings. For now….Aboriginal Studies….

  6. Love, “If the Shoe Fits” that looks like a fun one from Sandie. 🙂

  7. When I’m not writing, I teach third grade and when I tell the kids I write books, the first question is, “Did you draw the pictures on the cover?” They’re always disappointed when I tell them I can’t so much as draw a stick figure. The art department gets the credit (or not, if you don’t fancy the cover.) 🙂
