The Words Between Us

The Words Between Us by Erin Bartels

Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family’s ignominious past. She thought she’d finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels.

When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father’s scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything. That book–a first edition Catcher in the Rye–is soon followed by the other books she shared with Peter nearly twenty years ago, with one arriving in the mail each day. But why would Peter be making contact after all these years? And why does she have a sinking feeling that she’s about to be exposed all over again?

With evocative prose that recalls the classic novels we love, Erin Bartels pens a story that shows that words–the ones we say, the ones we read, and the ones we write–have more power than we imagine.

One More River to Cross

One More River to Cross by Jane Kirkpatrick

In 1844, two years before the Donner Party, the Stevens-Murphy company left Missouri to be the first wagons into California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The first of many for young Mary Sullivan, newlywed Sarah Montgomery, the widow Ellen Murphy, and her pregnant sister-in-law Maolisa.

When the party separates in three directions, each risks losing those they loved and faces the prospect of learning that adversity can destroy or redefine. 1. I agree! Great covers. Wow!
And romantic suspense is definitely hot right now!

  2. I’m very excited about The Gryphon Heist and the cover brings to mind James Rollins and Preston & Child novels. I ADORE The Words Between Us cover! It brings to mind one of those fabulous used book store that are slightly unorganized and you have to dig to find your books, but that’s half the fun. I agree about One More River to Cross. Simply stunning. The Girl Behind the Red Rope and Unscripted are also different than the CBA norm and that’s what I love about them. That single bit of red on the Dekker book is so eye catching. While Deadly Deceit isn’t my favorite cover I do like the red filter.

  3. Hey Rel!
There are several unconventional covers here that I am drawn to! While I like Jane Kirkpatrick’s new cover, I must disagree on its being one of the best. 🙂 It leaves me cold. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) Actually I do feel a bit cold looking at it, which is a good thing, but I think I should also feel a bit of hope and warmth, and that is lacking. I think the wagons should be a bit closer so that a few people are evident but still a bit in the distance. I really like Regina Scott’s new cover, and the title is spot on! The Amish covers are a bit typical but still nice. While I would pick the historical to read, I actually like the cover of Suzanne Woods Fisher’s title better. The desks show the schoolhouse, and the view from the window shows the setting and season. Speaking of seasons, I love Melody Carlson’s new Christmas cover. It reminds me of a Hallmark Christmas movie setting. I agree with your appreciation of Erin Bartels’ cover. I love the use of the books! However, I can’t help but wonder when someone took that picture of the bookshelves in my library! 🙂 I love the viewpoint of Davis Bunn’s cover. I like the closeup of Tari Faris’s cover picture, and it’s without a decapitation! The font is great, too. However, the trim on the left side is distracting to me. From the look of the book in the Fall 2019 Revell Fiction catalog, it goes with the spine which “wraps” around a bit on the front and back covers. I like this effect on some covers, but this one just doesn’t quite work for me as it takes away from the great picture and title. As for the romantic suspense covers, I prefer Elizabeth Goddard’s cover. I like the different colors in backdrop. As for Natalie Walters’ new cover, I prefer the first of the series. To me, this one looks a bit too similar to the first and now becomes the “red one.” I like Irene Hannon’s ok, but I am still not much of a fan of the covers in Lynn Blackburn’s series. I like covers in a series to go together, but these are a bit too similar to me. I do like the cover of the suspense by James R. Hannibal. It goes with the style of so many of the big suspense titles in the secular market. The cover of the collaboration between Ted and Rachelle Dekker is wonderful! The red rope works as a “barrier” between the secrets within the pages and the anticipatory reader! Thanks for sharing the covers of another great lineup of CF, Rel, and have a great holiday!

  4. OHMYGOSH!! I love Tari’s – and also, it sounds like a wonderful read! Gotta’ love a new contemporary author find. *insert excitement* I’m also anxious to read Natalie’s debut (pout in May??) and of course, someday I need to read Irene’s newest series! Ted’s and Rachelle’s co-writing project also has a cutting-edge design that impresses! Thanks, as always, for sharing, Rel. Happy vacation!! 🙂

  5. Just added many of these to my list for 2019! I enjoy suspense and thrillers — looks like there are several coming up this year.
