Welcome to another First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. The fabulous Hoarding Books team is dedicating this week’s First Line Friday to Australia given the recent bushfires that have burned up our nation, and continue to do so. We have been amazed here in Australia with the support given to us by the global community, something we never expected, and a gesture like this from the bookish community is just as encouraging. Featuring Australian settings and/or Australian authors is such a fun way to give us a shout out and to feel the bookish love.
Of course, I’m delighted to once again feature my beautiful friend, Dorothy Adamek’s CARRY ME AWAY. A story set in Australia, by an Australian, with the Australian location on the cover, inspired by a true Australian story that has never stopped capturing our nation’s interest or imagination, and those of tourists who visit Loch Ard Gorge in their droves. This is a beautiful story of loss, heartache, hope, love, and devotion – truly a novel you don’t want to miss! I’d love for you to show your support by adding Carry Me Away (and the first Blue Wren Shallows novel, Carry Me Home, featured today on Carrie’s Reading is My Superpower blog) to your ereader or bookshelves. They are both historical romance at its finest.
First Line
If you are looking for lyrical prose like Joanne Bischof, Laura Frantz, and Lori Benton, Dorothy’s books are a must read!
The Book
Inspired by the incredible true story of an Australian shipwreck and those who survived to tell the tale.
When the Black Swallow sinks off the Australian coast in 1877, Australian midshipman Tom Darley rescues English passenger Ada Carmichael from the disaster that claims her entire family. News of the only two survivors enchants the world, but Ada needs to hide before secrets and old foes find her. Tom is chasing big dreams of a crumbling house he will convert into a small hotel ~ but the promising start he’s acquired now sits at the bottom of the sea.
Inexplicably entangled, Ada and Tom lean upon each other to make sense of the tragedy that’s displaced them. But when scheming journalists observe their affection they drag Tom into life-altering riches and a news-worthy romance he cannot resist. So he arranges for Ada’s protection where only he might find her ~ the quiet Phillip Island farm of his friends Shadrach and Finella Jones.
And that’s where real trouble finds them. When heroic promises fail to shelter, and love refuses to be silenced, only surrender will pluck Ada and Tom from where life has wrecked them.
Australian author, Dorothy Adamek, writes Displacement Fiction ~ the stories of people upended by tragedy and trauma, and their struggle to belong in their new world. Couched in romance, her fiction is set in the late Victorian era. She is the author of Carry Me Home, the first book in the Blue Wren Shallows trilogy, and resides with her family in the world’s most liveable city, Melbourne.

My heart certainly goes out to our Australian friends, animals, and land. I was truly blessed to spend time there and it is heartbreaking to see the loss. Thank you for this amazing story. I loved seeing the beach and area when I visited Phillip Island with Rel. It was a truly beautiful experience. This book was how historical fiction should be written. Gripping and an intensely poignant read. Thank you for sharing it with us, Dorothy!

An ominous beginning if ever there was one!

This series has been on my radar 🙂 Happy Friday! I’m sharing the first lines from Guarded by Sara Davison on my blog today, so here’s a semi-random line from Chapter 8:
“I don’t do relationship advice, so you, Nicole, and God are going to have to work this out amongst yourselves.”
