Synopsis:~
When Phoebe starts receiving anonymous letters, she never once thinks the most irresponsible man in London is her correspondent. Or that she will fall in love with him.
Phoebe Kimball grew up believing in love, but after failing to find a gentleman capable of capturing her heart, she has turned more practical than romantic. She is determined to find a husband in London this Season. If only the annoying Mr. Fenwick would stop appearing every time she sets her cap at someone! When an anonymous letter arrives warning her that her current target is unsuitable marital material, Phoebe begins a relationship with the letter writer that promises something more than a practical alliance.
Griffin Fenwick does not usually care for women on the hunt for a husband, but Miss Kimball’s quick wit and refusal to admit she enjoys his company intrigues him. When he realizes the gentlemen on her list of eligible bachelors is full with scoundrels, he warns her the only way he can – through a letter. As he comes to know Phoebe better, he soon realizes he wishes to put his own name on her list. If only she liked Griffin as much as she liked her anonymous correspondent.
When Phoebe realizes its been Griffin writing her all along, will she put aside practicality for love, or spurn Griffin for even trying to woo her?
Letters for Phoebe is the first in a series of books about five friends. The next four novellas will be written by authors Joanna Barker, Megan Walker, Heidi Kimball, and Arlem Hawks.
My take:~
Loved this Regency romance from new author to me, Sally Britton. Sweet and romantic, with a good dose of wit, Letters for Phoebe had me charmed from beginning to end.
Rather than the wild rake trope so prolific in love stories penned in this era, Britton creates a kind-hearted and fun-loving hero, whose shenanigans often go a little too far for the more staid members of the ton, including the determined Miss Kimball who dismisses Griffin as an irresponsible and reckless man.
As Griffin’s desire to prevent an unscrupulous match for Phoebe develops into feelings of a more personal nature, he continues to hide behind anonymous letters that direct her away from the worst of men, nudging her towards himself.
Letter for Phoebe is a delightful read and I’ve already added more of Britton’s novels to my wishlist. Readers of Kristi Ann Hunter, Mimi Matthews, and Josi. S. Kilpack will find much to love in this story.
Letters for Phoebe was my own purchase.
Sally Britton no longer lives in the desert, but is off exploring the world with her husband and four children. She started writing her first story on her mother’s electric typewriter, when she was fourteen years old. She knew romance was the way for her to go fairly early on. Reading her way through Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, and Lucy Maud Montgomery, Sally also determined she wanted to write about the elegant, complex world of centuries past.
Sally graduated from Brigham Young University in 2007 with a bachelor’s in English, her emphasis on British literature. She met and married her husband not long after and they’ve been building their happily ever after since that day.
