The Writer

Why do you tell stories?

I tell stories because these people live in my head and they won’t go away unless I tell their stories. 🙂

Your favourite place to read

On my screened-in deck with the birds singing.

Best meal of the day

Any meal that includes dessert.

Most beloved childhood book

As a kid I dreamed of having a horse, but I was an adult before that happened. So I read every Black Stallion book as fast as it came out.

An episode of The Lucille Ball Show. Enough said.

Whose music inspires you?

Josh Groban. I love his music.

What ice-cream flavour would you be?

Raspberry sherbet…sweet but just a little tart.

The most recent novel you read

Things I Never Told You by Beth Vogt

What’s your current book recommendation?

Things I Never Told You

Name a book character you can’t forget

Ari Ben Canaan from Exodus written by Leon Uris. I read that book when I was fourteen and I’ve never forgotten this character.

Rel: Fabulous book!

Dream travel destination

Hawaii is on my bucket list and Alaska and Ireland…

The Book

Justice Betrayed

It’s Elvis Week in Memphis, and homicide Detective Rachel Sloan isn’t sure her day could get any stranger when aging Elvis impersonator Vic Vegas asks to see her. But when he produces a photo of her murdered mother with four Elvis impersonators–one of whom had also been murdered soon after the photo was taken–she’s forced to reevaluate. Is there some connection between the two unsolved cases? And could the recent break-in at Vic’s home be tied to his obsession with finding his friend’s killer?

When yet another person in the photo is murdered, Rachel suddenly has her hands full investigating three cases. Lieutenant Boone Callahan offers his help, but their checkered romantic past threatens to get in the way. Can they solve the cases before the murderer makes Rachel victim number four?

What was the working title?

The Elvis Book

Rel: 🙂

Describe your book in 5 adjectives

Page-turning, suspenseful, intriguing, dangerous, romantic

Which character did you enjoy writing most?

Erin. She is based on a person I know and she has no duplicity.

Which character gave you the most grief?

Shirley, the sociopath. It was really hard getting into her head.

What emotions do you think your story will generate in readers?

Suspense, a little humour, and fear.

What emotions did you experience while writing this story?

All of the above plus nostalgia…the series is set in Memphis, and I knew I had to have an Elvis book. After all, I’d had my picture taken in front of the first house he bought for his parents…

How do you choose your characters names?

Rachel Sloan’s name was chosen back in Justice Buried. It just fit her even though at the time, I didn’t know she would be the heroine of Justice Betrayed. 🙂

Boone’s name was originally something else in Justice Buried, but when he became the hero in Justice Betrayed, his name didn’t fit. The final edits weren’t in so I picked Boone for his first name because it resonated with me. Then I needed a last name, and I asked my Facebook family to suggest last names. When someone wrote Callahan, I knew that’s who he was!

By the way, my FB family also picked the name for one of the Elvis tribute artists—Vic Vegas.PT beige cover (4)

Definitely will visit when I read Pat’s book!

  15. My mom and I visited Graceland a few years ago. It was very impressive. I like some of Elvis’ music but have not listened extensively to it.

  16. I wouldn’t call myself an Elvis fan as he was well before my time. I think about the only songs I do love is Blue Suede Shoes and Jailhouse Rock.

Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy) show is one of my favorite! That’s some classic comedy right there, they don’t make shows like that anymore.

Thanks for the fun author interview & giveaway chance, Rel and Patricia!

  18. Yes, I am a Elvis fan! I was 10 years old in 1960 so my teenage years were the years of Elvis’s greatest popularity. I enjoyed his music and his movies and I know exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard about his death.

  19. And yes, I’ve visited Graceland

  20. I grew up playing all of my mom’s old Elvis Presley records. Favorite song: Return to Sender. My neighbor and I used to put the record player in the garage and we would take our shoes off and slide on the smooth cement and sing our hearts out. Some of my favorite childhood memories.
