Synopsis:~

Caroline Delacroix is at the pinnacle of Washington high society in her role as secretary to the first lady of the United States. But beneath the facade of her beauty, glamorous wardrobe, and dazzling personality, she’s hiding a terrible secret. If she cannot untangle a web of foreign espionage, her brother will face execution for treason.

Nathaniel Trask is the newly appointed head of the president’s Secret Service team. He is immediately suspicious of Caroline despite his overwhelming attraction to her quick wit and undeniable charm. Desperate to keep the president protected, Nathaniel must battle to keep his focus fully on his job as the threat to the president rises.

Amid the glamorous pageantry of Gilded Age Washington, DC, Caroline and Nathaniel will face adventure, danger, and heartbreak in a race against time that will span the continent and the depth of human emotion.

My take:~

The second novel in Elizabeth Camden’s Hope & Glory historical romance series featuring the Delacroix siblings is an intriguing read. I found the historical aspects – the development of the Secret Service and the McKinley presidency – kept my interest high, along with the well-drawn characters of the forward thinking and independent Caroline and the straight-laced and responsible Nathaniel Trask. Camden is gifted in creating unique characters, one of the many reasons I find her one of the most talented writers in this genre in the Christian market. Having said that, there were moments in the romantic interactions between Caroline and Nathaniel that seemed a little out of step with how Camden portrayed their personalities and motivations. While it pulled me a little from the story at times, The Gilded Lady is still a wonderful read, particularly the ongoing mystery surrounding the wayward Delacroix, baby brother Luke. Older brother Gray, from the excellent The Spice King, and his new wife return in ways that bring authenticity to the sibling relationship and much satisfaction to any reader who enjoys revisiting beloved characters. I’m very excited for the final book and the outcome for all the Delacroix siblings and their loved ones.

With thanks to Bethany House for my review copy. All opinions remain my own.

** THE SPICE KING is currently on sale. I highly recommend you get the ebook while it is only 99 cents! Limited time.
