Top Ten Tuesday: Books From My Favorite Genre

Top Ten Tuesday

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Gosh, they come around quickly…which is why I’m posting today. Technically, it’s still Tuesday in the Northern Hemisphere so I’m going with that 😉 Today’s topic is books from my favourite genre. Mine is romantic suspense – high on the suspense, organic with the romance. Once again, I’ve scanned my bookshelves and pulled ten books I love and, as always, these are only some of my favourites that happen to be on my shelves and not out on loan! There’s nothing I love more than pulling out some old favourites, from many years ago when my love of romantic suspense was born!

*****

Novels from my favourite genre

The DMZ by Jeanette Windle

I’ve loved all Jeanette stories and this one, set in the Amazonian jungle, is fantastic. Loved both the lead characters and the ability Jeanette has making the jungle come alive, along with the gun runners and drug lords!

Firethorn by Ronie Kendig

It’s always an impossible task to choose a favourite Kendig novel, but the brilliant, tragic, and romantic ending to her Discarded Heroes series is hard to pass up. Griffin and Kazi are well matched and no one writes an action scene like Ronie, with a nuanced love story, perfectly pitched against the danger, suspense, and realities of paramilitary life.

Freefall by Kristen Heitzmann

Cameron Pierce. I probably should say more! Kristin’s novels have great depth and always intelligent writing. This is an older story of her, but one I return to always. Hawaii, a woman who doesn’t know her own name, and a suspicious and protective man!

The Splitting Storm by Rene Gutteridge

The start or the end of this trilogy? You can read it either way. An intriguing series well worth finding.

Tourmaline by Jon Henderson

This one would be hard to find but started my on my romantic suspense journey. Published in the early 90s, when Christian Fiction wasn’t so constrained in content – it’s worth reading just to see how things have changed. I loved the international setting, the political undercurrents, and the developing connection between a jaded photojournalist and a young Christian woman caught up in a terrorist plot. And there’s a 15+ year age gap between them!! Another trilogy worth reading.

Dark Fathom by Tom Morrisey

This is the second Beck Easton Adventure and both books are fabulous. Espionage and the NSA feature prominently, along with more ocean diving adventures. Fast paced and fun!

The Negotiator by Dee Henderson

Loved this story! Dave and Kate are super characters and the attraction is electric to the point you don’t notice there’s not a kiss until the final page!

Lights of the Veil by Patty Metzer

Fell in love with everything about this story by the late Patty Metzer. The exotic setting of India, the diverse characters, and suspense and romance in abundance. I haven’t read it for nearly 20 years but it makes me want to dive back in.

Fossil Hunter by John B. Olson

A fabulous debut novel, once again an international setting – Iraq – which I clearly love. A female palaeontologist with a crippling disability and her arch-rival wrestle with a discovery that could turn scientific theory on its head.

Sands of Time by Susan May Warren

Another author I adore so I’m highlighting her second Mission: Russia international thriller. Again with the setting! Russia this time, with fabulous characters and suspense, made all the more authentic by Susan’s years living in Russia as a missionary.

What’s your favourite genre? Have you read any of these stories?

  1. I could easily have done romantic suspense as well, but I’m going to have to get my hands on some of the ones you’ve listed here. I’ve only read three of them: The Negotiator, Freefall, and Firethorn.

    • Katie Donovan » I could have easily done a few genres, too!! But when push comes to shove, RS it is for me. I can’t believe you have only read 3 of these! You’d especially enjoy Fossil Hunter and The DMZ. Have you read any of Jeanette Windle’s?

  2. Fossil Hunter sounds super interesting!

    My TTT.

  3. Rene Gutteridge is one of my favorite authors. My book club read the book you featured years ago. I would love a new release from her. Thanks for sharing your list. I featured legal suspense written by lawyers.

    • Beckie B. » Oh, great idea! I will pop over and look. As a former lawyer, I’m very particular about legal suspense but Randy Singer is a favourite and I’m guessing he’s on your list 😉

  4. Kristin Heitzman’ Freefall was one of the first Inspirational novels I read and that book was what made me want to write in the Inspirational market. Like you, I still go back and reread it. And I love all of Susie’s books. And Dee Henderson’s. Will have to check out the others.

  5. Historical romance!! So Tamara Leigh tops my list of favorite authors – – but I will always remember and have a special place in my heart for Francine Rivers and her “Mark of the Lion” series – – wow! How powerful and full of early Christian history and their trials of tribulation and faith.

    • Pam – Florida » YES!!! To both Tamara and the Mark of the Lion series – one of my all time favourites and one I’ve read over and over again.
