Tyndale House has released its Spring 2019 novels and I’m delighted to showcase them here. The calibre of authors and storytelling is excellent in this lineup. You don’t get much better than Carla Laureano and Francine Rivers if you are looking for contemporary romance that delves into complexity rather than fluff. I enjoyed Francine’s and can’t wait to read Brunch at Bittersweet Cafe, following on from the fabulous Saturday Night Supper Club. Allison, Jolina, and Amy, while writing in different genres, have similarities in their storytelling with layered characterisation, intelligent and lyrical prose, and heart wrenching plots. As a past student of 18th Century History, in particular the French Revolution, I especially can’t wait to read Allison’s take on that pivotal time in history.
The covers are excellent overall, depicting their genres well and themed to the series (Carla’s) or author (Joel’s) very well. Amy’s updated cover of her previously released novel is a particular favourite of mine, along with Allison’s unique treatment.
What say you, friends?
Brunch at Bittersweet Café by Carla Laureano
A Supper Club Novel
From the RITA Award–winning author of Five Days in Skye comes a sweet, romantic treat that will leave you hungry for more.
Baker and pastry chef Melody Johansson has always believed in finding the positive in every situation, but seven years after she moved to Denver, she can’t deny that she’s stuck in a rut. One relationship after another has ended in disaster, and her classical French training is being wasted on her night job in a mediocre chain bakery. Then the charming and handsome private pilot Justin Keller lands on the doorstep of her workplace in a snowstorm, and Melody feels like it’s a sign that her luck is finally turning around.
Justin is intrigued by the lively bohemian baker, but the last thing he’s looking for is a relationship. His own romantic failures have proven that the demands of his job are incompatible with meaningful connections, and he’s already pledged his life savings to a new business venture across the country—an island air charter in Florida with his sister and brother-in-law.
Against their better judgment, Melody and Justin find themselves drawn together by their unconventional career choices and shared love of adventure. But when an unexpected windfall provides Melody with the chance to open her dream bakery-café in Denver with her best friend, chef Rachel Bishop, she’s faced with an impossible choice: stay and put down roots with the people and place she’s come to call home . . . or give it all up for the man she loves.

The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers (softcover edition)
New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece.
A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want—money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist—an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.
Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship—and both their lives—forever.

The Seamstress by Allison Pittman
A beautifully crafted story breathes life into the cameo character from the classic novel A Tale of Two Cities.
France, 1788
It is the best of times…
On a tranquil farm nestled in the French countryside, two orphaned cousins—Renée and Laurette—have been raised under the caring guardianship of young Émile Gagnon, the last of a once-prosperous family. No longer starving girls, Laurette and Renée now spend days tending Gagnon’s sheep, and nights in their cozy loft, whispering secrets and dreams in this time of waning innocence and peace.
It is the worst of times…
Paris groans with a restlessness that can no longer be contained within its city streets. Hunger and hatred fuel her people. Violence seeps into the ornate halls of Versailles. Even Gagnon’s table in the quiet village of Mouton Blanc bears witness to the rumbles of rebellion, where Marcel Moreau embodies its voice and heart.
It is the story that has never been told.
In one night, the best and worst of fate collide. A chance encounter with a fashionable woman will bring Renée’s sewing skills to light and secure a place in the court of Queen Marie Antoinette. An act of reckless passion will throw Laurette into the arms of the increasingly militant Marcel. And Gagnon, steadfast in his faith in God and country, can only watch as those he loves march straight into the heart of the revolution.

How the Light Gets In by Jolina Petersheim
From the highly acclaimed author of The Outcast and The Alliance, which New York Times bestselling author Lisa Wingate called “a book that begs to be savored,” comes an engrossing novel about marriage and motherhood, loss and moving on.
When Ruth Neufeld’s husband and father-in-law are killed overseas, she and her mother-in-law, Mabel, travel with Ruth’s young daughters to bury her husband near his childhood home. She hopes his Wisconsin Mennonite community will be a quiet place to grieve and piece together next steps.
Ruth and her family are welcomed by Elam, her husband’s cousin, who invites them to stay at his cranberry farm through the harvest. Sifting through fields of berries and memories of a marriage that was broken long before her husband died, Ruth finds solace in the beauty of the land and healing through hard work and budding friendship. She also encounters the possibility of new love with Elam, whose gentle encouragement awakens hopes and dreams she thought she’d lost forever.
But an unexpected twist threatens to unseat the happy ending Ruth is about to write for herself. On the precipice of a fresh start and a new marriage, Ruth must make an impossible decision: which path to choose if her husband isn’t dead after all.

Then Sings My Soul by Amy K. Sorrells
1904, Chudniv, Ukraine. Playing hide-and-seek in bucolic fields of sunflowers, young Jakob never imagines the horrific secrets he will carry as he and his brother escape through genocide-ridden Eastern Europe.
1994, South Haven, Michigan. At age 94, time is running out for any hope that Jakob can be free from his burden of guilt.

While Nel navigates the restoration and sale of Jakob’s dilapidated lake house, her high school sweetheart shows up in town, along with unexpected correspondence from Ukraine. And when she discovers a mysterious gemstone in Jakob’s old lapidary room, Jakob’s condition worsens as he begins having flashbacks about his baby sister from nearly a century past.
As father and daughter race against time to discover the truth behind Jackob’s fragmented memories, the God they have both been running from shows that he redeems not only broken years, but also the future.

This is a very interesting group of covers. My favorite may surprise you, Rel, as it is not in my usual genres. I love the cover of Jolina Petersheim’s new novel! The light coming in the window reflects the title wonderfully. And the mother and two daughters appear to be looking for the light as they peer out of the window. I also love the new cover of Amy Sorrells’ novel. It is both sweet and haunting at the same time with the little boy and the starkness of the background and coloring. I am looking forward to Allison Pittman’s new novel the most. I love the way the plot involves both literary and historical stories at the same time! The cover is great, too! The French flag colors add a great touch to the script. Joel Rosenberg’s fits well with his other novels and the suspense/thriller genre. The yellow of the title pops well against the dark blue. I like Carla Laureano’s cover. It fits well with the first in the series. While there is a decapitation, it works ok as the emphasis is on the macarons in her hand. And they would be highly praised on a Spring Baking competition on Food Network with their colors and their feet! The cover painting of Francine Rivers’ newest works well with the story. Thanks for sharing, Rel! Have a blessed day!
