Bookish Question of the Week

QuoftheweekThe last month has been incredibly busy and my reading time has been almost non-existent. Yes, I’m breaking out in hives and enduring reading withdrawal symptoms!

I do most of my reading late at night after I’ve hopped into bed. There’s nothing like ending my day getting lost in the pages of novel. Yet I’ll grab any moment I can to read – occasionally as I eat my lunch, when I’m sitting in the car waiting to pick up my girls from school or activities, while waiting for an appointment, and more.

How about you? When is your optimal time to read – do you prefer to read in one long block, or do you also read for five minutes here or there when you can? Let’s share reading habits!

  1. I prefer to read in a long block. Now that I am an empty nester, I get to read for hours at a time. My favorite time is from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. This is when I begin supper preparations and before my husband gets home. I get a lot read between mixing, stirring and tasting. Early evening is also a favorite time. My college kids were home for Christmas break. I loved the time spent together, but I remembered why I didn’t get a lot of books read before they went off! Love your Bookish Questions. Happy New Year to you!

  2. Fun question!! I love reading in blocks when I can, but since I don’t always have that time, I’ll read at night, right before I go to bed as well. I usually read during my lunch break too. Pretty much any spare moment ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Haven’t been reading a lot either lately, Rel. Sadly. BUT to answer your question I usually read in the evening when I get home. If the book is really good, however, I’ll read a bit of it every spare minute I get.

  4. i am a lucky bunny because i have about an hour commute to and from work by subway every day— (lucky i live in a massive city) so i get most of my reading done then!

    • That’s a great way to spend the commute time. I listen to books on my kindle or audiobooks now when I have to get in the car and I’m on my own!

  5. Mostly late at night or I do get a decent block of reading time in the morning. Of late, I haven’t been reading so much at night and more in the morning. I do read if I have 5 – 15 minutes, but I think overall, I like a longer time. Or right now I do. It changes I guess. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. I definitely like having long blocks of time to read, but then I distract myself doing other things! Or that’s when I should be doing homework… I generally end up taking my current book with me for an extra few minutes here and there though. Lately I’ve been back into the routine of reading once I’m in bed {if it’s not way too late already} and I have to read under my sheets with a flashlight so my roommate can sleep! I’ve read under the covers more as a college student than I ever did as a little girl!

  7. Every single night before I go to sleep. There is nothing like sinking into bed with a good book in hand. It is something that feeds my soul. Otherwise I have been known to read at the following times as well:
    * While cooking dinner – you can hold a book with one hand and stir a pot with the other
    * Over breakfast
    * On lazy weekend afternoons
    * Sunday mornings in the hour between dropping kids off to prepare for serving in Kids Church and the beginning of church. It has been a very precious hour!!
    * In the middle of the night when insomnia hits.

    What can I say? I am tragic when it comes to finding time to read.

  8. I used to be a long block gal but since having kids I’ve had to temper by requirements ๐Ÿ˜‰ Now I’m happy if I can grab fifteen minutes during the day but try to always read at least a chapter at night when I’m cosy and tucked in ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I like to read any time I can. I normally read at work in between phone calls (I work in a service center taking in bound calls, so at times, that can be a little crazy!). I get really upset when I get a call and have to stop reading in the middle of a chapter, though! I also like to read after dinner is cooked, the dishes are done, and I’m in my pj’s curled up on my couch. It helps me wind down after a long day.

    • You are spot on, Shannah – reading helps me unwind, too. It’s great for relaxing…unless you are reading a Ronie Kendig book and she gets the heart rate going crazy – hehe!

  10. Most of my reading now is done in my recliner after dinner, and in bed before I go to sleep. I used to get in a half-hour or so while I ate my lunch, but now that hubby’s semi-retired (read: popping in at irregular times throughout the day), evenings are my best time. Can’t fall asleep unless I’ve read for at least a few minutes.

  11. When I’m not under the gun for a deadline, I like to read at night…sometimes staying up until 2 to finish a book. I do read on my iPhone when I’m stuck somewhere.

  12. Ooh. Interesting question. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately actually. I used to be a big block reader. I’d set aside time on a Saturday afternoon to read an entire book but now that a large part of my day-to-day work life includes reading, I find that I’m a few chapters at a time kind of girl. When I do get the time to hunker down for an afternoon, that’s still my preference; though sometimes that means a book ends much too soon and then you must start the yearning for the author’s next book ๐Ÿ™‚
