Abingdon Press has just revealed its latest covers for the American summer so here they are for your enjoyment and comments!
Cover wise I think there are some hits and misses ~ Ace’s, Lisa’s and Myra’s are the most striking for me although I think they could have done more with the font on Carolina Reckoning. I also like Tickled Pink and Letters to Ruby. I’m not a fan of Ruth or Gail’s I’m afraid 🙁
Congratulations to Karen Barnett who has just announced her debut release, Mistaken, which releases in July so the cover isn’t available yet but I’ll update it when I can.
So, now it’s your turn! Which ones catch your eye, or not?!
Mistaken by Karen Marie Barnett
Since booze and prohibition have made criminals out of every man in her world, Laurie Burke resolves to find at least one honorable man to fill her life. Convinced that handsome newcomer Daniel Shepherd is connected with her brother’s rum-running gang, Laurie quickly scratches his name off her list.
Daniel has mixed feelings about returning to the dirty mill town of his youth, but grudgingly agrees to manage his grandfather’s drug store until a replacement can be found. The moment he meets Laurie on the windswept bluff overlooking the beach, he knows that if he can earn her love, he might have a reason to stay. But when Laurie pushes him away–for none other than Federal Agent Samuel Brown–Daniel wonders if Laurie really is the upstanding woman he thought her to be.
The Strait of Juan de Fuca, just off the beaches of Port Angeles, Washington, was treacherous water for reckless rum-runners—and the agents who tried to catch them. So when she realizes her brother is in danger, romance is the last thing on Laurie’s mind. Yet the people she believes she can trust, may not be so honorable after all.

Letters from Ruby by Adam Thomas
When the newly ordained Episcopal priest Rev. Calvin Harper arrives in Victory, West Virginia, to be the pastor at an ailing parish, he has no idea how much he still has to learn about being a priest. Thankfully, Ruby Redding takes the young man under her wing and teaches him everything she has learned throughout her long, storied life. Seminary never taught Calvin that the only true way to be a witness to God’s presence in this world is to remain in relationship with people no matter what life throws at them. His studies never taught him that detachment is the bane of ministry. He never learned that deep grief comes only from deep love. But in his first year in Victory, Calvin learns all this and more from Ruby, a woman so full of God’s light that it can’t help but spill onto the people around her.

Asserting the maturity that her classmates have often lacked, Priscilla holds her head high. But she can’t ignore everything. When she catches her mother in the arms of her former high school principal, Priscilla can’t get out of town fast enough. Eager to get back to her more comfortable life, Priscilla runs head on into an ultimatum: Tim tells her they’re not getting any younger—as if she has to be reminded.

hmm. I think I’ll be reading more Abingdon books this year. They have really stepped up their game with their covers and the types of books they are acquiring. Anita’s reminds me of the Father Tim (was that his name??) books by Jan Karon. Think they are trying to attract those kind of readers?
February 12, 2013 at 8:39 am
I agree, Casey – the range of books Abingdon are offering has certainly branched out. Jan Karon wrote the Mitford series – I think that’s the ones you are referring to!
February 12, 2013 at 8:45 am
Yes, those are the ones I was thinking of. 🙂 I think their branching out is a good addition to the CF industry. 🙂

I’m so excited to be a part of this list! I’ve gotten a sneak preview of the artwork for MISTAKEN and I am absolutely thrilled. Hopefully it will be available for viewing soon. From this collection of covers, I am most intrigued by Adam Thomas’s Letters from Ruby, because I adore vintage automobiles. All of the covers are stunning. The Abingdon Press art department does fantastic work!
February 12, 2013 at 8:43 am
Hey Karen – congratulations! Looking forward to seeing your cover art and posting it here. Enjoy this special time as a debut author!
February 11, 2013 at 5:05 pm
Hmmm…Debbie Mayne’s cover standouts as stepping away from the prototype CF cover, which I quite like. Unfortunately, I see more cover misses than hits in this lot.
February 12, 2013 at 8:44 am
Yes, I’m with you, Lydia.
February 12, 2013 at 2:24 am
Myra’s cover is gorgeous!!! And it sounds like a great read!
February 12, 2013 at 8:45 am
Hi Sarah – lovely to have you drop by. I think Myra’s cover has been the most commented on. It’s very romantic,in a traditional way.
February 12, 2013 at 3:09 am
Odd that the two covers for the same series of Mayne’s are so different. (Don’t like the first Mayne cover, love the second one).
I do like the Carolina Reckoning cover as it exudes the mysterious/suspense nuance.
But like the others, I love Myra Johnson’s cover! I’ve never heard of her, but I definitely am adding this to my wishlist NOW!
February 12, 2013 at 9:02 am
Hi Marie – Myra has written a number of books for Heartsong Presents and One Imperfect Christmas for Abgingdon.
I agree with you on Debby’s covers!
February 12, 2013 at 7:20 am
I love Myra’s cover! It reminds me of the ads that used to hang in stores from that period. I do like parts of Lisa’s cover. That plantation is a bit overused on book covers and I agree, Rel, that the font is too generic. Ace’s cover is also a winner to me, very evocative of the plot. I like Barbara’s for the Christmas feel, except for the eyes and nose. I thought similar about Anita’s as Casey, only I didn’t think Father Tim books but I thought of the publisher, Penguin Putnam. It definitely has the feel and look of a lot of their covers. Anita is a great writer, by the way. I love Debby and her work but I do not like either of these covers. The first in the series that you showed earlier, the second edition of the cover that is, is fantastic! The cover for Tickled Pink is OK but I really do not like the one for Bless Her Heart. Only cutting off the face is terrible in my opinion. I’d rather they cut off the whole head, and you know how I usually feel about that, Rel. 🙂 I hope the face does not continue on the spine. I have seen that done on a book and it is just creepy to me. The story that intrigues me is Ruth’s, and I plan to read it, but the cover is pretty awful I’m afraid. The lady’s hand position seems odd to me, too. Gail’s is a bit too cartoonish to me. I like Adam’s at the top, but the trees are too prominent on the bottom, taking away from the fact that a small town with a church is being shown. I like the look that is being used for the books in Margaret’s series, but the building shown does not lend itself to a suspense look at all. Thanks for sharing these. It wounds like a wonderful lineup.
February 12, 2013 at 9:05 am
Pretty much ‘ditto’ for everything you said! You are spot on with those comments, Aaron, especially about the hand in Ruth’s – not a good angle, I’m afraid. I’ve been hanging out to hear your thoughts on these so thanks again for your insightful contributions to the discussion 🙂
February 12, 2013 at 9:48 am
Wow some great covers there. I have to agree with you about Gail’s though Rel – a chicken with a laptop??
February 12, 2013 at 12:59 pm
