First Line Friday: Jaime Jo Wright’s The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus (with giveaway)

It’s Friday!! Which means another First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. This week I’m featuring Jaime Jo Wright’s time slip mystery novel with the gorgeous cover, The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus.

Between you and me, I don’t like circuses 🙁 Clowns and dressed up animals and acrobats who might fall from high wires just aren’t my thing! Jaime’s novel might be the one and only way I will attend the circus in my adult life 🙂

Hearing such great things about this story, so make sure you add it to your wishlists and enter the giveaway below, thanks to Bethany House Publishers!

First Line

Such an evocative beginning to this story captures the mystery and intrigue about the words that follow after.

The Book

Welcome to Bonaventure Circus, where misfits go to hide.

In 1928, the Bonaventure Circus has become a refuge for many, but Pippa Ripley was rejected from its inner circle as a baby and is no longer content to leave the reason for that rejection unquestioned. When she receives mysterious messages from someone called the “Watchman,” she is determined to find him and the connection to her birth. As Pippa’s search leads her to a man seeking justice for his murdered sister and evidence that a serial killer has been haunting the circus train, she must decide if uncovering her roots is worth putting herself directly in the path of the killer.

Decades later, an old circus train depot’s future hangs in the balance–it will either be torn down or preserved for historical importance, and its fate rests on Realtor Chandler Faulk’s shoulders. As she dives deep into the depot’s history, she’s also balancing a newly diagnosed disease and the pressures of single motherhood. When she discovers clues to unsolved murders of the past, Chandler is pulled into a story far darker and more haunting than even an abandoned train depot could portend.

  1. The high wire and trapeze acts amaze me!

  2. Happy Friday!

My first lines come from The Summer House by Lauren K Denton……

T he morning Worth left, something pulled Lily from her sleep, though at first glance nothing seemed out of place. The light coming through the bedroom window was soft and hazy. Above her the ceiling fan ticked and swayed, and outside a lone bird sang, trying to rouse its friends. Everything else was still and quiet.

Have an awesome weekend and happy reading!📚💜

  3. Happy Friday! My first line is from ” I’ll be Home” by Toni Shiloh:

“Starr Lewis hated to return home a failure.”

  4. Most of my circus knowledge comes from films, but I enjoy watching acrobatic sports, so trapeze sounds appealing!

  5. I haven’t ever been to the circus but I would have liked to have seen the elephant act. That or the acrobats. Thanks for the chance to win!

  6. This book is intriguing! I’m sharing the first line from Finding Love for the Workaholic by Laurie Larsen on my blog today. “Isabelle Harmon drew in a lungful of air.”

  7. Happy Friday! On my blog I’m sharing from a non-fiction text called Just Show Up by Kara Tippetts and Jill Lynn Buteyn. I’m just beginning chapter 3 so I’ll share a line from there.
“Years ago, the pastor who baptized our daughter was diagnosed with ALS.”
Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂❤📚

  8. Happy Friday!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this book!! I loved the circus as a little girl (minus the clowns)!!

Over on my blog I shared The Fifth Avenue Story Society by Rachel Hauck
“Well this was a fine mess. Spending the night in Central Booking for instigating a fight at a wedding reception.”

    Have a lovely weekend!💕

  9. I do not loud noises so anything loud like the cannon at the circus was not my favorite.

  10. My favorite act is the trapeze.

  11. My favorite act is trick pony riding–amazing balance.

  12. I haven’t been in years but I used to like the trapeze act and high wire walking. Thanks for the chance.

  13. I think the acrobats would be interesting.

  14. I’m reading this right now!

My first line is from The Haunting At Bonaventure Circus by Jaime Jo Wright:

Life was not unlike the wisp of fog that curled around the base of a grave marker, softly caressing the marble before dissolving into the violet shadow of the night.

  15. I think I only went once when I was little and I don’t recall much, but I think the performers who do arial acrobatics are amazing! Their skills are amazing!

  16. My favourite circus act is the trapeze!

  17. I don’t like clowns either! I like to watch the trapeze artists, but only if they have a net. Otherwise, I’m sweating and hyperventilating.
